Stephen Austin’s father, Moses Austin was the Spanish governor of Texas who granted him the land.

What religion did most of the colonists practice at this time? Which group of people were also practicing Roman Catholicism in America? Most Americans were still against Roman Catholicism.
The colonists saw an opportunity to produce cotton. Most were pro-slavery.
Mexican ban was put in place in 1830.

Stephen Austin urged Texans to revolt against the Mexican government.

Sam Houston was the commander of the Texan forces.
Attack was on Santa Anna’s army at San Jacinto, Texas.
Only took 18 minutes to capture Santa Anna.
Santa Anna was forced to sign a treaty recognizing Texan independence.
Took a decade to annex Texas.
Public opinion…South wanted Texas to be a slave state. North wanted westward expansion without slaves.
Texas did not want to be controlled by anyone (Mexico, Spain, or the US).

8. Annexation Texas was annexed in 1845
Tensions were rising between America and Mexico.
James K. Polk, an expansionist, won the Election of He was in favor of annexation and negotiated a deal with Britain to divide Oregon.
Treaty signed by Santa Anna said the southern Texas border was the Rio Grande. Mexico claimed it was the Nueces River (farther to the north).
