3 Ancient Religion Most ancient religions practiced Polytheism
Belief in many gods Both the Greek and the Roman religions were polytheistic.

4 Judaism 101 The Jewish faith only has one god. This is called monotheism. The Jews formed a Covenant with God. If they followed his rules he would take care of the Hebrews. These rules were given to Moses by God. (Ten Commandments)

5 Core Jewish Values Jews believe good deeds not faith are the most important part of life. Sins are not forgiven by God. One most atone for their sins by doing good deeds. The Jewish holy book is the Torah. It contains 5 books, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, & Deuteronomy.

6 Views on God & Beyond God gave man reason but is not able to be comprehended by man. There are many different views on the afterlife, but most have no hell. Jews tend to focus not on the afterlife, but instead on living life for today. Jews preach a strong code of ethics.

7 The Messiah Jews are awaiting the coming of the Messiah.
When he arrives it will signal the “End of Days”. The Dead will rise and Earth will become heaven.

8 Arrival of Christianity
Christianity began as a sect of Judaism. Christians believe that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah.

9 The Message Jesus accepted the 10 Commandments & most Jewish teachings. The new teachings: He preached love, peace, forgiveness, morality, and service to others. Faith in God and Jesus will bring eternal salvation. Sins are forgiven by asking God for forgiveness.

10 Holy Trinity Christians believe in 3 aspects of God known as the Holy Trinity. The Father (God), the Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit.

11 Death of Jesus Many Jews & Romans saw Jesus as a rebel who threatened their control. According to the Bible Jesus was betrayed by one of his apostles. After his arrest Jesus was crucified & died.

12 Peter & Paul Peter was the disciple responsible for starting the Christian church in Rome Paul was the most responsible for the spread of Christianity. He was the first to teach non-Jews about Jesus. Christianity was a popular faith because it was easy to join, offered immortality, & you could talk to God.

13 The Afterlife There various views in Christianity on the afterlife depending on your denomination. Most denominations believe a person can go to Heaven or to Hell. Heaven is ruled by God & Hell is ruled by the Devil. To get into heaven one must be free of sin and believe in Jesus.
