1 Parameters in Revit Family Creation
This PPT explains what are parameters and how they are used in Revit families |

2 Parameters - Types Type Parameter
A Type Parameter is common to a particular type of component. For e.g., lets consider a Double door with 3 types of configurations - 2’6” wide, 3’0” wide and 3’6” wide. Here, width is the parameter which defines 3 configurations of the same double door. So, width is the type parameter used here, which defines 3 types of the same door. Type Parameter |

3 Parameters - Types Instance Parameter
When you place the double door in a wall in Revit, the individual door is an instance of door type. The instance of the door has its own unique properties which extend on the door type properties e.g. if there is a level difference of 6” between the rooms where the double door is placed, the sill height of the door can be changed to 6” for that particular instance of the door. Instance Parameter

4 Parameters - Types Shared and Project Parameters
Revit has a concept of shared and project parameters. Project Parameters are particular to the current project or Revit model whereas shared parameters can be stored in a file and used for many projects. In other words, for any project, we can have parameters that refer to that particular project, which can be created directly in that revit model or we can save the parameters in a ‘shared parameters.txt’ file, which can be used for that project as well as any other project that can refer to that text file. Shared and Project Parameters

5 Common Family Parameters
Available in Revit Description Name Text Completely customizable. Can be used to collect unique data. Integer A value that is always expressed as an integer. Number Used to collect miscellaneous numeric data. Can be defined by a formula. Can also have real numbers. Length Can be used to establish the length of an element or subcomponent. Can be defined by a formula. This is the default type. Area Can be used to establish the area of an element or subcomponent. Formulas can be used in this field. Volume Angle Can be used to establish the angle of an element or subcomponent. Slope Can be used to create parameters that define slope.

6 Common Family Parameters
Available in Revit Description Name Currency Can be used to create currency parameters. Mass Density A value that represents the mass per unit volume of a material. URL Provides a web link to user defined URL. Material Establishes parameter in which a specific material can be assigned. Image Establishes a parameter in which a specific raster image can be assigned. Yes/No Used most often for instance properties when the parameter is defined with either a Yes or No. <Family Type...> Used with nested components, Allows you to swap components after the family is loaded into a project. Divided Surface Type Establishes a parameter with which divided surface components (such as panels and patterns) can be driven. Formulas can be used in this field.
