2 1861 With Lincoln’s call for volunteers Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee and North Carolina will join the Confederacy. The Confederate capital will move to Richmond, Virginia and Jefferson Davis of Mississippi will be President.

3 Both sides quickly gather men and form armies
Both sides quickly gather men and form armies. The North’s objectives (Anaconda Plan) will include a naval blockade of the South, control of the Mississippi River and the capture of Richmond.

4 July 21st 1861, the First Battle of Bull Run is fought
July 21st 1861, the First Battle of Bull Run is fought. It will be a Confederate victory but the main outcome is that both sides realize this war will be a long and hard fought struggle.

5 To defend Washington DC from a Confederate attack the military builds a series of forts around the city.

6 In August the first battle of the “Western” front will be fought at Wilson’s Creek, Missouri. It was a Confederate victory but will have little impact on the war.

7 Activity Write down the following question:
Who was the author of this excerpt and when was it delivered? What was going on in the United States when this speech was delivered? What is President Lincoln saying?

8 Excerpt from President Lincoln’s 1st Inaugural Address delivered March 4th At the time of the address 7 states have already left the Union but no shots have been fired. In your hands, my dissatisfied fellow-countrymen, and not in mine, is the momentous issue of civil war. The Government will not assail you. You can have no conflict without being yourselves the aggressors. You have no oath registered in heaven to destroy the Government, while I shall have the most solemn one to "preserve, protect, and defend it."
