Before Testing Read and sign the Security Affidavit Review the Directions for Administration (DFA) Assessment Services, SDUSD

3 Before Testing: Special Education, 504 Students, and English Learners
Review IEP and 504 Plans for accommodations that must be made available to students Plan for any variations that EL students will use during testing Identify which students will be taking the CMA and CAPA before testing begins; it’s important that you administer the correct test indicated in the IEP Assessment Services, SDUSD

4 Before Testing: Prepare Testing Locations
Create an ideal testing environment- free from noise with good lighting & ventilation Remove/cover all instructional materials visible to students related to the content of the test Make arrangements for students w/IEPs & 504s (i.e. read aloud) Find out where students who need more time to finish the test are to go, which adult will escort the student(s) to the alternate location, and who will supervise the extended session Arrange a quiet activity for students who finish early; the activity should not be related to the test being given Assessment Services, SDUSD

Before Testing: Check out test materials from site test coordinator DAILY Know exactly where to pick up your test materials and where you return them each day of testing Upon receipt, inventory your materials ensuring that everything is accounted for and you have sufficient number of test booklets and an answer doc for each student Assessment Services, SDUSD

2012 STAR Examiner Training Before Testing (Continued) Administer each test part according to the schedule provided by your site test coordinator Ensure there is enough time to complete a part before beginning the part; each part must be administered in a single setting without breaks (unless indicated on 504/IEP) Each part of the test is indicated by a stop sign Assessment Services, SDUSD Available for download at

During Testing Give pre-identified answer documents to the correct students Give correct test booklets to students Make sure students use only No. 2 pencils Students must clear their desks Students are allowed to use scratch paper on science tests; used scratch paper is to be submitted to your site test coordinator Students should not have books, papers, cell phones, or any electronic devices on their desks Assessment Services, SDUSD Available for download at 7

DIRECTIONS FOR ADMINISTRATION (DFA) “SAY” boxes must be read exactly as written “T” in “SAY” boxes indicates that everything in the box may be orally translated for EL students if regularly done in the classroom; can translate “SAY” boxes only and may not assist students with test questions Assessment Services, SDUSD

Monitor students; actively supervise making sure students are: On the correct part Do not go on to other parts or back to a previously completed part Do not skip a question on their answer document Assessment Services, SDUSD

If some students need more time and have to go to another testing room: the test examiner must collect the test booklets and answer documents from the students a proctor or other school staff must escort the students to the designated testing room no students should leave a testing room with the test booklets and answer documents by themselves Assessment Services, SDUSD

13 IMPORTANT REMINDERS Test Examiners CANNOT:
Review test questions before, during, or after testing Leave instructional materials up in the classroom Check students’ answers Advise students of a wrong answer or advise student to check an answer Withhold answer docs until students demonstrate they have the right answers Divulge the contents of the test(s) to anyone Ensure that you READ & UNDERSTAND the AFFIDAVIT that you’ve signed Assessment Services, SDUSD

During Testing (Continued) Managing Emergency Situations and Testing Incidents Test administration incident = any situation that occurs before, during, or after testing that does not conform to the instructions stated in the DFA or the coordinator’s manual Disruption in testing (fire alarm, power outage, evacuation) Test administration error (randomly distributing Pre-ID’d answer documents) Student cheating (mark A2, Special Conditions) Report incident to your site test coordinator ASAP Assessment Services, SDUSD
