Presentation on theme: "Warm Up: Journal Entry (Half Page)"— Presentation transcript:

1 Warm Up: Journal Entry (Half Page)
Think about the moral code you live by, and answer the following: If you could ensure the entire world followed one rule, what would it be, and why? Give examples to back up your reasoning.

2 Share your one rule with your table

3 Unami Academic Honesty

4 Basically, there are four concerns:
Lying Copying Cheating Plagiarizing

5 Lying Verbally misrepresenting the completion or location of an assignment: “I left it at home” “My printer is out of ink” “I lost my flashdrive” “I didn’t know that file was corrupted” “I must have sent my rough copy by accident”

6 Copying Using another student’s work (with or without permission) as an aid or tool to complete your own Copying homework/classwork Sharing answers to assignments

7 Cheating Giving or receiving unauthorized assistance on any academic assessment. Looking at someone else’s paper Using cheat sheets Using electronic devices Discussing assessment content (if someone has a test 1st period that you have 3rd period, don’t ask what is on it) Vica-Versa: don’t tell them—it will just bring down the average of your class and make it clear to your teacher that you are feeding them answers. Everybody looks bad.

8 Plagiarizing Passing off the ideas or words of another as one’s own
Copying and pasting from a published source Using others’ ideas, words, or images in your paper without citing your sources Turning in someone else’s work as your own

9 Resubmission Do not resubmit work you turned in for previous classes—it may be your work, but it is not a reflection of the skills you are currently learning This will skew the data I collect from your assessments and will hinder my ability to provide you with the education you deserve

10 A note on the following:
If you ever violate this policy within your three years here, you get a first offense, continue (at any point in your Unami career) and the consequences will get worse

11 First Offense Reported to main office, every teacher you ever have on Infinite Campus will know about it Letter/ sent to parents You will have to redo the assessment on your own time If it’s not done within the week, you’re banned from all extra-curriculars until you do it Possible disqualification from membership/involvement in NJHS Possible disqualification from membership in other school organizations

12 Second Offense Reported to main office, every teacher you ever have on Infinite Campus will know about it Letter/ sent to parents You will have to redo the assessment on your own time. It is impossible to get better than a 70% (C-) If it’s not done within the week, you’re banned from all extra-curriculars until you do it Disqualification from membership/involvement in NJHS Possible disqualification from membership in other school organizations

13 Third Offense Reported to main office, every teacher you ever have on Infinite Campus will know about it Letter/ sent to parents You will have to redo the assessment on your own time. 14 Plagiarism in the professional world
Read the class copy of the article entitled, “Carleen Basler Resigns After Admitting to Plagiarism”, then answer the following questions

15 What happened as to Professor Basler after she was caught?
How did this affect the people close to her?

16 How was her plagiarism discovered?

17 What happened to professor Basler?

18 Why did she plagiarize?

19 What did Christian Aviles find out?

20 What was her reputation like before she was caught?

21 What was it like after she was caught?

22 Why does this matter to us?
“If you’re not asking for help on a lower level—high school, college—or you’re not able to get help on a lower level, at a certain point, you’re probably going to stop asking”

23 Think about your rule from the beginning of class
Did this professor’s actions violate your rule? If it had anything to do with honesty or respect, then yes.

24 OPUS Unami’s award-winning literary magazine
Accepts submissions from all Unami students All writing All art All photography If you have something you’d like to submit for consideration, bring it to me, Ms. Pizzi (down the hall), or Mr. Kleine (7th Grade hallway)

25 Take out a post-it note Please write down your full name and the letter that best applies to you: A: I only want my work to be seen in class B: I would be okay with it if my work was published in OPUS C: I would be okay with it if Miss I sent my work to national contests and magazines I’ll obviously ask you first anyway, but it’s a way for me to see who I should ask to begin with Leave the note on my board before you go!
