1 2017 MHS LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER ORIENTATION

2 TODAY’S OBJECTIVES Learn about library procedures, materials, services, etc. Learn how the library can help with your studies & classes at MHS Participate in a fun activity to practice & help you remember what you learned today!

3 WELCOME TO THE LIBRARY! Mrs. O’Toole- Librarian ?- Library Assistant
Can visit before & after school (with permission), during study halls, with classes Detention: 2:50-3:25 Monday-Thursday

4 EXPECTATIONS FOR LIBRARY USERS
To be Respectful To be Responsible To get Results: Doing research/assignments requiring library resources Recreational reading and/or magazine/book selection Quiet study time Please remember . . . Absolutely no food or drink near the computers, snacks only at tables no lunches/McDonalds, Tim Horton’s, Dunkin, etc.

5 ELECTRONIC DEVICES IN LIBRARY:
You may listen to music with headphones as long as others around you can’t hear it! You may use your phone/electronic device for school- work if assigned With a class at the discretion of your teacher Ask Mrs. O’Toole or library assistant if in a study hall No texting or talking on cell phones without permission or playing games!

6 HOW DO I VISIT THE LIBRARY DURING THE SCHOOL DAY?
PRIVILEGE PASS- next year RESEARCH PASS STUDY HALL PASS CLASS VISITS If you have a privilege pass, you should stay the whole period. If you need to leave SIGN-OUT!

7 RESEARCH PASS ONLY Classroom TEACHERS issue Research Passes
The pass is green and requires a signature from the issuing teacher and the study hall monitor; along with a brief description of the assignment Students must sign-in/sign-out to the library upon entering and exiting Grab passes to show as examples

8 STUDY HALL PASS Six students may come from each study hall when a class IS NOT working in the library Report to study hall first; NOT the library! Must stay the whole period

9 CLASS VISITS The library is closed to study
hall students when classes are scheduled Research & Privilege Passes may also be restricted depending on space Classes ALWAYS have priority for library computers To see if the library is “open” ask your study hall monitor, library staff, or check the online schedule

10 BORROWING MATERIALS Check-out material at the Main Desk using your student ID number; use return basket 3 Books~ 2 weeks; 1 Magazine~ 3 days Flash drive~ 2 weeks Headphones- check-out in library only! Laptops~ during school day only, by class period (return by 2:50pm at latest!)~ NOT ALLOWED IN LUNCHROOM/PP AREA! If overdues exist, no materials may circulate; you can be placed on the ineligible list! Please take care of library materials; there is a charge for lost or damaged materials! New rule- if you have overdue books, you cannot take out anymore!

11 FINDING LIBRARY MATERIALS
Newspapers- Batavia Daily News, Rochester D & C, USA Today on main table Magazines- Newest issues on display; can cut old issues for projects (ask Mrs. O’Toole or aide) Books- Mandarin Web OPAC (icon on desktop) Search by keyword, title, author, subject Get book reviews, summaries, author notes Search in any classroom & home Newspapers- We put the old copies on the bookshelf for you to cut. Please DO NOT cut the paper of the day! Magazines- old issues on wall 3 years back- we often have extra issues to cut

13 COMPUTER PROCEDURES Logging in:
User Name: firstinitial, lastname (ex. jsmith) Password: last years, if forgot Mrs. O’Toole will reset! Change Password: Combo 8 characters! Letters & numbers- not your name!! Follow the MCSD Acceptable Use Policy NO INAPPRORIATE SITES, NO DOWNLOADING, ONLY “GAMES” ALLOWED ARE ON LIBRARY WEBPAGE UNDER “FUN LEARNING ACTIVITES”~ restricted certain times of school year We will practice logging- on after this- User Name- ID, password- Medina

14 ONLINE INFORMATION SOURCES~ DATABASES
You will use these for projects at times All require passwords- available in the library Can get to from home from the library webpage Examples: CQ Researcher Grolier Online World Book Online Opposing Viewpoints Must follow acceptable use policy. Sit where we can see the screens if not with a class. Show website.

16 OTHER SERVICES…. Color Printer/Copier/Scanner- ask for help!
DMV Online Test- when of appropriate age! Plenty of New Books- coming in the next few weeks! Can borrow books from other schools Laminating machine- ask before using! Supply cart~ please keep items in the library

17 Office 365 & OneDrive What is it?
Cloud based access to , ­calendars and contacts; ­document storage and sharing (OneDrive); and the Microsoft Office suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint. You can get to your documents anytime, anywhere from any device  Five free downloads of MS Office on personal devices Let’s practice…..

18 accounts Can teachers and students or send to outside addresses (gmail, yahoo, aol, etc.) Can access from medincsd.org homepage click image of Office 365 on left side address is as follows: (ex. Username/password same as you use to login to computers!!

Reading Challenge- More info to come where you can read to earn extra credit in English and small prizes! Ecology Club- If interested in joining a club that promotes recycling in our building and taking care of our environment see Mrs. O’Toole or Mrs. Peracciny First Meeting- Thursday, September 28th

20 Library Scavenger Hunt Rules!
Pairs of two or individually Visit library webpage to begin- Click on Library Orientation First team to complete hunt with ALL CORRECT answers wins a prize Raise hand & Mrs. O’Toole will come over to check when ready; one wrong & out! DO NOT HIT DONE AT END!
