2 What is Athletic Training?
The prevention, recognition, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and health care administration of athletic injuries.

4 National Athletic Trainers’ Association
NATA- founded in 1950 Mission- to enhance the quality of health care for athletes and those engaged in physical activity, and to advance the profession of athletic training through education and research in prevention, management and rehabilitation of injuries. Contact info- Refer to p. 14 in your textbook.

5 The BOC certified athletic trainer
Board of Certification certified athletic trainer- A highly educated and skilled professional specializing in health care of the physically active. Integral member of health care team for athletes. Without a BOC ATC, coaches must assume the responsibilities for prevention and care of athletes.

7 Team Physician Cornerstone of the sports medicine team.
Often ends up the duty of the school nurse, emergence medical professionals, or family doctor. Duties include, but not limited to, availability when emergency situations arise, evaluating pre-participation physicals and medical histories, and working hand-in-hand with the rest of the sports medicine team.

8 Athletes Responsible for maintaining good physical condition
Practicing techniques taught by coaches Playing by the rules Following instructions of coaches and sports medicine team

9 Parents Assist athletes in remaining healthy
Update sports medicine team about injuries or illnesses Assure sports medicine team that treatments and nutritional plans will be followed through at home The only way parents can stay in the loop is if the other members of the sports medicine team communicate the information to them.

10 Officials Responsible for enforcing the rules
Monitoring playing conditions Cooperating with the sports medicine team when injuries occur or environmental hazards exist.

11 Coaches Plan practices- considering duration, skill levels, fatigue, and environmental factors Condition athletes Teach proper techniques & rules Selecting, fitting, and maintaining equipment Supervision of practice and game facilities Stay current with certifications- coaching, CPR and first aid, etc. Integral member of sports medicine team, especially if the school does not have a BOC ATC

12 Athletic Training Student (ATS)
Maintaining a clean athletic training facility Proper hygiene Inventory control Keeping track of supplies and equipment, and informing head trainer when supplies are low Checklist of supplies on hand at all times Pre-packaged medical kits Assuring that for all contests and practices there is enough water and ice for both treatments and hydration of athletes Occasionally pre/ post athlete weights are required

13 As the Experience of the ATC Increases
The ATC assumes duties such as… Taping Wrapping Changing dressings Providing minor treatments First aid procedures

Administration office, prevention, hydrotherapy, rehabilitation, treatment, physician’s examination office, and storage room At CHS these areas include room 1118, training room, weight room, and the nurse’s clinic

16 Hydrotherapy Area- Training Room
Whirlpools inspected annually Fill whirlpools Hot degrees Cold degrees Fill and rotate ice Make ice bags/ buckets for treatment Clean/ disinfect- Quat Stat & Kaboom Whirlpools Benches, chairs, tables Cabinets, sinks, counters, doors, walls Wash and fold towels

Restock taping areas Roll-up elastic/ cloth wraps Disinfect all areas utilized

18 Rehabilitation Areas- Weight Room & Training Room
Inspect all equipment Assure equipment is in proper place Clean and disinfect all equipment

19 Treatment Area- Training Room
Annual safety inspections Turn off and unplug when not in use Clean/ disinfect all areas Wash and fold towels

20 Storage Area- Room 1118 Keep accurate inventory and notify head trainer when inventory is low Clean and rotate stock Clean and disinfect all areas

23 Athletic Training Room Rules
Co-educational facility Treatment provided only to student/ athletes All medical treatments must be documented Athletes should shower after activity before receiving treatments Supplies will not be removed without permission from head trainer Sports equipment should be left in locker room Loud music is not permitted No cell phone use

24 Record Keeping To ensure proper treatment of athletes, careful records should be kept on all athletes. Record keeping begins with a pre-participation physical examination. At CHS the school nurse (Mrs. Tuuri) has these on file. These forms can be accessed through the Ohio High School Athletic Association website.

26 The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA)
The law insures the privacy rights of patients (athletes) when it comes to health records. Law restricts who has access to medical records, for how long, and for what reasons. All forms we use with athletes are protected under this law! All of this information is confidential! It is a violation of HIPAA law if this information is shared with anyone outside of the sports medicine team!
