1 How do historians study communities, heroes, and helpers?
Unit 6: Lesson 1 Objective: Students will be able to describe and explain how historians use tools and technology for the investigation of places and people, through the use of prior knowledge, analysis of pictures, and rigorous conversation. Standards: 3.0.A.1.a-d, 4.0.A.3.a, 5.0.A.2.c, 6.0.C.1.a, 6.0.G.1, SL.1.b,SL.2,.SL.4, RI.7, W2

Look at maps Look at old photos and videos Look for artifacts Listen to stories Read books and newspapers Search the internet Explore a community

4 What can you learn by looking at photos and videos? Turn and Talk

VHS VIDEO TAPE OLD COINS CAMERA and PHOTOS STATUES Historians can try to understand and experience the lifestyles of people long ago. Who is on the coins and who did they belong to? What is on the VHS tape? Why did someone make a statue of this person? Why was this kind of camera used and what is shown in the pictures?

6 What can you learn by listening to stories? Turn and Talk
Historians can interview people who lived long ago to learn information not written in books, newspapers, or shown in pictures.

7 What can you learn by reading books and newspapers? Turn and Talk
Who? What? When? Where? Why? How? Historians can uncover details about people, events, and places during a certain time.

8 What can you learn by searching the Internet? Turn and Talk
Tablets, Computers, and Phones Historians can find information written and posted about people and places. Historians will find videos, e-books, pictures, and websites.

9 What can you learn by exploring a community? Turn and Talk
Historians can observe the people and visit places while walking the streets in the community. Historians can make maps, take photos and videos, and interview people. Historians can find out who are and were the community helpers and learn about their contributions.
