Pair 1 needs to say how many types of contraception think they can name
Pair 2 needs to say how many types of contraception they think they can name.
The pair who says the can name the highest number starts. If they can name as many as they say they can they win, if they can’t the other pair wins!
To introduce the lesson play a game of Who Dares Wins (taken from the BBC National Lottery show). You will need to ask two pairs of volunteers to come up and play. Tell them that the topic is contraception. Pair 1 needs to say how many types of contraception they think they can name then pair 2 needs to do the same. The pair who says they can name the highest number starts. If they can name as many as they claim they win but if they can’t the other pair wins!

Guess the contraceptive:
This is a physical barrier that prevents the sperm from meeting the egg.
See what students already know about contraceptives. Explain they will see a statement on the board relating to a particular type of contraceptive. They will then see two answers below, if they think it is the first answer they need to stand up and if they think it is the second answer they need to sit down.

A form of artificial contraception taken up to three days after sex. It stops the production of an egg and/or stops an egg sticking to the side of the womb so it cannot develop any further.

7. Contraception
Contraception refers to the methods used to prevent unwanted pregnancies if you still want to have sex.
It is first of all important to know that condoms are the only contraception that will protect you from unwanted pregnancies and STIs. All the other forms of contraception only work in preventing unwanted pregnancies.
It is important to talk to people you trust before using contraception. If you are in a relationship you should talk to your partner about what you think would work best for you. Also speak to professionals such as your GP/Nurse or TADIC – the teenage drop in centre in Hedge End.
Explain what contraception is, that the condom is the only way of preventing both unwanted pregnancies and STIs and the importance of talking to someone they trust if they are thinking about using contraceptives. Also signpost here TADIC which is the local teenage drop in centre in Hedge End.

8. Types of Contraception
Which method of contraception you choose is entirely up to you, how your body works and your lifestyle. There are some you have to take every day, or every time you have sex, or there are some that last months or years.
There are a lot of options to choose from so you can find one that suits you. Most of these methods are available for free from your GP or TADIC.
Boots Sales Pitch
You are going to be given a table containing different types of contraceptives.
Spend a couple of minutes reading through the information in the table
Each group then needs to decide their top 3 contraceptives to pitch to the CEO of Boots Pharmacy. You have a maximum of 3 minutes to convince them to stock your particular types of contraceptive in their pharmacy.
You need to explain what each contraceptive is, why it is useful, any downsides, and finally compare it to other contraceptives on the market (e.g. doesn’t cause x like x).
Explain to students that it is up to them which type of contraceptive they use and that there are lots of options to choose from. Set up the task with students – explain that in small groups they will need to read the sheet containing a table with information on different types of contraceptives. Each group needs to decide on what they think are the three best options then create a pitch to deliver to the CEO of Boots pharmacy explaining to them why these are the best three contraceptives they should stock. Their pitch needs to be both persuasive, entertaining and informative. They will need to include what each contraceptive is, why it is useful, any pros and cons and compare it to other contraceptives on the market. Their pitch can be no longer than 3 minutes. When they have finished they will need to perform their pitch to the rest of the class.
When students have finished presenting ask them to pick out whether they had chosen similar options for their top 3 – why/why not?

10. Contraception Ranking
Based on your learning this lesson, rank what you personally think are the most to least effective contraceptives available – explain your top and bottom choice:

To finish the lesson ask students to rank the eight contraceptives they have explored from 1-8 from their own opinion in their books. They will need to justify their top and bottom choice.
