3 Learn: What is a Logo? A symbol, sign, or emblem.
Used to convey a succinct message. Logos tend to be graphical in nature, designed for easy recognition of an organization. A tool to build an identity for the organization, as part of its trademark or brand, and to generate favorable thoughts and feelings about the organization.   A logo needs to be simple, original and memorable for the greatest impact.

4 Good Logos… Interesting and intelligent combination and use of shapes, colors, typefaces and other elements can create an image that is simple, yet rich with a concept synonymous to the organization. Select symbols that best describe the business in the simplest way possible.

5 Good Logos… A logo can be either typeface or icon based, or a combination of both, like that of Red Cross, Nike, Coca Cola, and Sony etc. For this project you will be only be designing an icon to represent your business.

6 Good Logos… Consider that colors express meaning, have emotions associated with them, and designers implement them appropriately to suit the nature of the organization.

7 Good Logos… Are directed towards the masses, a logo should not have any cultural, racial, or other kind of bias, thus allowing it to appeal to the widest possible audience.

8 Good Logos Use abstract images to relate to the organization's philosophy if appropriate symbols and images are not found.

9 Abstract vs. Concrete Abstract images – Images that use shapes, colors, and lines to suggest ideas, concepts, or feelings; might suggest something in the real world, but it doesn’t look exactly like anything real Concrete images – Represents something that is real or occurs in nature; also called representational

15 Your Design Challenge Design a new logo for a Business your group is assigned As a group, determine the core concept, value or identity behind your company name; research as needed - 2 minutes As individuals, sketch as many ideas as you can, no talking – 5 minutes Share & brainstorm your ideas as a group; collaborate to create a final version and draw the final on the large poster – 20 minutes Presentation Self assess based on the design checklist – be prepared to explain your design solution Stand at the front with your team and poster to present

When you present, answer these questions: What is your company name? What is it’s purpose and personality? How does your logo use graphics and text? How do the colors express meaning? How well does your logo symbolize the name & purpose of the business? How well did your group work as a team?
