3 Encouraging independence
As we are now entering Year 5, it is really important to start developing your child’s independence (in preparation for their move to Secondary school in 2 years time). This can be through simple things, such as packing their own PE kits and getting them to remember their homework books. Self managing inhalers is recommended, and it is essential children have one in school (which must be named).

6 Reading- Strive for 5 We want children to enjoy reading and sharing books with you! Children who make the most progress in reading and writing are those who read everyday. Children in Year 5 need to develop their comprehension skills. You can help your child by asking them questions about what they are reading /encouraging them to use phonics for words they are unsure of. What do you think the purpose of this book is? Why do you think the author has chosen to use this word? What effect does it have on the reader? Find 3 adjectives that the author uses to describe the character/setting? What do you think might happen next? Why?
