1 Depression Diplomacy in the US Neutrality Act Good Neighbor Policy
Ban loans & sales of weapons to countries at war. Good Neighbor Policy Withdrew troops from Latin America. The US population was worried about their own economy.

2 Italy New World Power Leader - Mussolini
Italians were unhappy because they were left out of the Versailles Treaty. Italy was in the world-wide depression. In 1935 Italy invades and takes over the country of Ethiopia.

3 Soviet Union New World Power Leader - Stalin
He used collective farms to control production. Soviet Union was in the world-wide depression. He knew Germany wanted to expand to the east.

4 Japan New World Power Leader - Hirohito
In 1931 Japan attacks Manchuria for natural resources. By 1937 Japan controlled North China. The US was concerned about the Philippines. In 1940 the US cut off oil & rubber sales to Japan.

5 Germany New World Power Leader - Hitler
In 1933 Hitler is appointed Prime Minister of Germany. In 1934 Hitler becomes Commander-in-Chief of Armed Forces. 1935 Nuremberg Laws – Jews are stripped of their citizenship in Germany 1938 Kristallnacht (Night of Broken Glass) – government organized riots to destroy Jewish shops.

7 EUROPE AT WAR 1 1938 Germany claimed Austria and the Sudetenland
France & England come to protect Czechoslovakia. Munich Conference Hitler said he wants no more land. 1939 all of Czechoslovakia falls to the Germans

9 EUROPE AT WAR Nazi – Soviet Pact 2 (1939)
Hitler want to avoid a 2 front war. Soviet Union & Germany agree to not attack each other. They agree to divide Poland. Sept. 1 - Germany invades Poland (Blitzkrieg – lighting attack) France & Britain declare war on Germany.

French line of defense, Germans goes around through Belgium & Holland. Maginot Line 300,000 British & French troops are the English Channel. Dunkirk In June of 1940 France surrenders to Germany. Paris Falls

Hitler wants to invade England, starts bombing in early 1940 The British use radar to help shoot down 2,000 German planes. By late 1940 Hitler gives up invasion plans but continues to bomb as a terror tactic.
