Multi-radio Mesh Networks – Enabling a Total Muniwireless Solution Mike Johnson Mesh Networks Product Group Motorola

2 Outline Multi-Constituent Municipal Drivers
Technical and Functional Requirements Multi-Radio Multi-Technology System Applications

3 What is Driving Today’s Municipality
Reduce crime and secure critical infrastructure Provide mission critical data access to first responders Improve efficiency and responsiveness of public workers Provide metro wireless broadband access to attract & retain businesses and the professional class Use low cost wireless technology to help underprivileged residents cross the digital divide Position the city as a destination of choice for businesses, residents and visitors Not Every Muni Mobile Broadband Deployment Has All These Requirements

4 Key Consumers of Metro Wireless Data
Public Access Public Works Public Safety

5 Solution Requirements
Standards Based & Low Cost Scalable, Best Effort Access No High Speed Mobility or Special Security + Contiguous Street Level Coverage Secure, High Speed Mobile Network Access Outdoor Tracking/Location of People & Assets + Robust and Survivable Mission Critical Access Instant, Ad hoc Networking at Incidents In-Building Tracking/Location for Fire/Police

6 The Right Tool for the Right Job…
Built-in Position Location Seamless Infrastructure & Ad Hoc Meshing Enhanced Multipath & Interference Mitigation Enhanced Security Location-Aware, Wide-Area, Mobile Broadband Radio Attributes Enhanced High Speed Mobility WiFi Ubiquitous Cheap Clients Standard Fixed/ Nomadic Access Broadband DSL/Cable Replacement Public Wireless Access Public Works, Safety & Transportation Ports, Mining, Industrial Control…

7 Multi-Radio Technology Advantages
Can Support Licensed and Unlicensed Spectrum Unlicensed 2.4Ghz spectrum delivers flexible low cost access 4.9Ghz minimizes interference & congestion for first responders Leverages Ubiquity of WiFi Technology and Products Industry standard WiFi devices and users can access the network Leverages huge installed base of Wireless Laptops and PDAs Fixed, High Speed Mobility And Tracking in a Single Network Deliver 100+ mph broadband connectivity to and from users Built-in tracking and location with or without GPS equipment Improved performance and scalability Allows specific radios to be dedicated to mesh backhaul Purpose built mobile radios and WiFi deliver client access Multiple radios to meet multiple needs

8 Quadrature Division Multiple Access (QDMA) Radio
QDMA: a DARPA mobile broadband battlefield radio technology High Speed Mobile Data (250Mph) 100% IP Transparent Secure and Manageable Optimized for Mesh Architecture Reliable & Survivable Resistant to Interference and Multipath Accurate/Fast Geo-Location Built-in QDMA battlefield radio technology has been incorporated into Motorola’s Mesh Enabled Architecture (MEA®) & MOTOMESH Solutions

9 Mesh Technology Advantages
Self-forming, Self-healing, Self-balancing Automatic and Survivable Communications Simplified Deployment and Management Optimized Mesh Network Architecture Every radio acts as a router/repeater Every user provides additional coverage Supports “Zero Infrastructure” Ad Hoc Networks Instant incident data & video communications Users can still communicate if network infrastructure is damaged Minimizes Backhaul Requirements Wireless multi-hopping reduces wired backhaul by up to 90% Leads to lower operational costs and faster ROI Mesh Architecture can be used to determine position/location Triangulation and time of flight from multiple nodes Location info can be propagated thought the broadband network

10 Unlicensed/Enterprise
Wireless/ WiFi / Broadband Spectrum 5.2GHz 5.8GHz Unlicensed/Enterprise Home Unlicensed/Enterprise 2.4GHz 10

11 4.9 GHz Licensed Spectrum February, 2002:
2.4 GHz 5.8 5.2 4.9 Unlicensed Unlicensed Unlicensed February, 2002: FCC designates 50 MHz of spectrum at 4.9 GHz for broadband public safety use Licensed Spectrum – Eliminate Interference

12 Unlicensed/Enterprise
Wireless/ WiFi / Broadband Spectrum 5.2GHz 5.8GHz Unlicensed/Enterprise Home Unlicensed/Enterprise 4.9GHz Licensed Licensed Broadband 2.4GHz 12

13 4.9 GHz Band Plan Eight Channels of 5MHz (40 MHz total)
Ten Channels of 1MHz (10 MHz total) Per FCC rules ( ),these channels can be aggregated to channel bandwidths of 5, 10, 15, or 20 MHz. The maximum bandwidth of a 4.9GHz channel is 20 MHz.

14 Who can use 4.9Ghz? Public Safety services as defined under Part 90 rule section are eligible to hold a 4.9 GHz license. All state or local governmental entities (including municipal utilities) are eligible to hold 4.9 GHz licenses. Entities not eligible to hold a license, but which perform operations in support of public safety, (such as private critical infrastructure industries) can negotiate sharing agreements with 4.9 GHz public safety licensees. Sharing of systems must be by written agreement between the licensee and the party sharing the system and all communications by the non-licensee must be in support of public safety, related to the protection of life, health or property. The federal government is not eligible to hold 4.9 GHz licenses but can share state and local public safety systems.

15 WiFi Advantages High Data Rates Many Inexpensive Clients Wide Adoption
Good news is its there.. Bad news it is everywhere! Works Well in Fixed Situations Ongoing Standards Work Data rates, QoS, Security, Meshing. Etc

16 MOTOMESH® Multi-Radio Broadband Solution
