2 introduction Governance is a pivotal concept in the study of Public Administration , Development Admin and Political Science A high level of citizen understanding & cooperation is necessary for a democratic government to be successful Over time governments have become aware that they need to work together to resolve complex problem that needs to include non-profit organisations and the private sector as well as CBOs

3 Governance as an act of governing
Governing issues are not just public (state) anymore Governing according to Kooiman is the totality of interactions in which the public as well as the private sector cooperate

4 Types of governance Democratic governance – government where the power to form a government and to make decisions by legitimate representatives lies with voters often referred to as the voters Corporate governance – the manner is which boards or their like direct a corporation and the rules applying to that direction.

5 Types of governance Networked, holistic or third party governance Public management lies at the centre of a web composed of many different relationships that extend to the citizen, the state, society and its values, to the economy, development and more. At the heart of the web is interaction and interdependence Network analysis and discovering new governance patterns.

Challenge that networked or holistic governance brought: Holistic governance as a reform of policy reform, reform of budget, government structures, work processes, professional networks, management practices, use of information systems and of accountability Holistic governance collaborate, coordinate and integrate

Confronting – face to face meetings Compromising – both parties giving in on certain points and allows them to have their way on other points Smoothing (accommodating) Forcing (or competing) – imposing a solution on the other party Avoiding (withdrawal) – mainly a temporary solution
