1 Unconditional Election
What We Believe… The Doctrines of Grace Unconditional Election The Extent of God’s Love

2 The “Doctrines of Grace”
Unconditional Election… “Unconditional election is God’s free choice before creation, not based on foreseen faith, to which traitors he will grant faith and repentance, pardoning them, and adopting them into his everlasting family of joy.” ~John Piper

3 The “Doctrines of Grace”
Unconditional Election… God took the initiative to love us (Romans 5:8); God loved us long before we loved Him (Ephesians 1:4-5); God loved us and determined, according to His own purposes and will that He would save us, or establish a restored relationship with us forever when His justice could rightly have seen our eternal damnation in Hell (Ephesians 2:3-5); We love God only because He first loved us (1 John 4:19).

4 The “Doctrines of Grace”
Unconditional Election… “Our object should not be to have scripture on our side but to be on the side of scripture; and however dear any sentiment may have become by being long entertained, so soon as it is seen to be contrary to the Bible, we must be prepared to abandon it without hesitation.” ~ William Symington

5 The “Doctrines of Grace” – summed up in the “Five Points of Calvinism” - TULIP
T — Total depravity (total inability) – sin has affected every aspect of man rendering him “dead” to God (Ephesians 2:1-3) U — Unconditional Election – God choses (elects) persons unto salvation by His own sovereign choice (Ephesians 1:6) L — Limited atonement (particular redemption) – Christ died for a specific people chosen by God (John 17:9-11). I — Irresistible grace (effectual calling) – those who God chooses to save will respond to God’s gracious call (John 6:37-40) P — Perseverance of the Saints – those whom God has chosen to save, will be saved and exhibit fruits of salvation (Philippians 1:6).

6 The “Doctrines of Grace”
Unconditional Election… Fact: Election is not something squeezed from one or two obscure verses. Both the Old and New Testaments detail God’s plan of salvation being worked out in history, and God’s action in choosing who will be saved is an integral of this plan.

7 The “Doctrines of Grace”
Unconditional Election… Fact: unconditional election is a sovereign act of God, the immediate purpose of which is to save undeserving sinners and, in this age, to place them within a great community of loyal, obedient servants called the church, whose ultimate purpose is to reflect and point others to the glory and honor of God.

8 The “Doctrines of Grace”
Unconditional Election… Fact: unconditional election is the free and unconditioned act of God’s grace and mercy.

9 The “Doctrines of Grace”
Unconditional Election… Fact: Understanding God’s electing love is a praise inspiring, practical truth that is to be pondered by each and every one of God’s people.

10 2 Thessalonians 2:13-15 13 But we should always give thanks to God for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth. 14 It was for this He called you through our gospel, that you may gain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us.

11 Ephesians 1:3-4 “3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him…”

12 Colossians 3:12-14 12 So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. 14 Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.

13 Romans 1:16 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.”

14 The “Doctrines of Grace”
Unconditional Election… The Question Anticipated (Romans 9:1-5) The Question Answered (Romans 9:6-13) Objection #1 - This makes God unjust or unfair in choosing one and not another for salvation (Romans 9:14-18)

15 The “Doctrines of Grace”
Pharaoh’s Hardened Heart (Spoken of 14 times in Exodus 7-14) Statement of fact – (5 times) 7:13, 22; 8:19; 9:7, 35. Pharaoh hardened his own heart – (3 times) 8:15, 32; 9:34 The LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart – (6 times) 9:12; 10:1, 20, 27; 11:10; 14:8

16 The “Doctrines of Grace”
The total depravity of all people (what they did themselves): For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. (Romans 1:21) Therefore… “God gave them over…” (Romans 1:24, 26, 28).

17 The “Doctrines of Grace”
Unconditional Election… The Question Anticipated (Romans 9:1-5) The Question Answered (Romans 9:6-13) Objection #1 - This makes God unjust or unfair in choosing one and not another for salvation (Romans 9:14-18) Objection #2 - How can God punish those to whom He has not shown mercy to? (Romans 9:19-29)

18 The “Doctrines of Grace”
Unconditional Election… The clay God is working with is actually comprised of guilty, death deserving criminals. The fact that God chooses to pardon some while leaving others to face the punishment they rightly deserve then is not about fairness. The fact that God pardons and saves some is not a revealing of what is fair; rather it is a revealing of His love, His mercy, His grace, and His purpose.

19 The “Doctrines of Grace”
Unconditional Election… Unconditional election reminds us that there will not be one person in in hell who does not deserve to be there AND there will not be one person in heaven who does deserve to be there.

20 Revelation 7:9-10 9 After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could count, from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, and palm branches were in their hands; 10 and they cry out with a loud voice, saying, "Salvation to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb."
