5 Location 1600 B.C.- original people settled on Tiber River (Italian Peninsula) Italy Looks like a boot Mountainous (like Greece) Longest coastlines in Europe As a result of the long coastline and access to the seas trade was extremely important to the people of Rome.

Italy has the longest coastline of any European Country. The Peninsula touches the Adriatic Sea to the East, the Mediterranean to the South and the Tyrrhenian to the West

7 Rome is built on seven hills which provided not only protection from attackers but also from the flooding Tiber River.

8 Rome’s geographic location influenced its expansion and success
Rome’s geographic location influenced its expansion and success. Located on the Mediterranean Sea, Rome traded and interacted with other lands. It also provided a buffer from invasion. The Alps Mountains provided protection from the north.

9 Crossing Cultures Ancient times:
Ships sailed from all parts of the Mediterranean up the Tiber River to Rome Unloaded cargo Roman citizens met sailors from other lands & learned about: Agriculture (growing crops) Stories & legends Romans were known for basing some aspects of their culture on information they learned from people of other cultures.

10 Climate The land and climate of Rome is perfect for farming. Rome is in what is called a Mediterranean climate meaning there is lots of rain and it is warm most of the year.

13 First People Early Romans called themselves Latins (spoke Latin)
Began calling themselves Romans when they became more powerful and other villages united with them.

14 Etruscan Rule As Rome grew in power, they caught the attention of northern neighbors = Etruscans  Etruscans conquered Rome- 600 B.C.  Soon took over almost all of Italian Peninsula 

15 Etruscan Rule Etruscans Skilled builders & farmers (taught Romans)
Aqueducts (carries water to cities) Romans learned how to make better weapons and ships

16 Etruscan Rule After conquering the village of Rome, the Tarquins (Etruscan family) established a monarchy and ruled for over a century

17 Etruscan Rule Under Tarquin rule, Rome grew in power and wealth but Romans rebelled and overthrew their cruel king and established a republic  Romans resented Etruscan Kings 509 B.C. Tarquin (Etruscan noble) murdered the king and took power Romans challenged Etruscan rule during this turmoil Roman Leader, Junius Brutus promised to take the throne from Tarquin Brutus forced them out and became Rome’s leader

18 Conclusion Rome enters a “glorious period” At this time Rome emerges:
New government Many victories Rising power in the ancient world
