3. WHAT ARE CONDOMS?
Sheaths of thin latex (or polyurethane) worn on the penis during intercourse (vaginal, oral, anal)
Barrier method of birth control: collects semen before, during, after ejaculation to keep semen from partner’s body openings
Reduces risk of STD’s (more for some than others) if used consistently and correctly
Can be made of latex, animal skin (lamb) or non-latex but only latex and polyurethane give HIV protection

4. EFFECTIVENESS
Estimated pregnancy rates during perfect use of condoms, that is for those who report using the method exactly as it should be used (correctly) and at every act of intercourse (consistently), is 3 percent at 12 months.
The most frequently cited condom effectiveness rate is for typical use, which includes perfect and imperfect use
The pregnancy rate during typical use can be much higher (10- 14%) than for perfect use, but this is due primarily to inconsistent and incorrect use, not to condom failure.
Condom failure – the device breaking or slipping off completely during intercourse – is uncommon if used correctly

5. Putting a Condom On:
Should be put on BEFORE the penis touches the partner’s body openings
Check expiration date…tear package carefully
If not lubricated, lubricate with a drop or two of water-soluble lubricant or spermicide
Pull back the foreskin, unless circumcised, before rolling on the condom
Leave ½” space at the tip
Place the rolled condom with the ring up over the tip of the hard penis while pinching out the air at the tip
Unroll with the other hand
Roll it all the way down to the base of the penis
Smooth out any air bubbles to prevent chance of friction causing a break
Lubricate outside of condom if not pre-lubricated

6. Taking the Condom Off:
Pull out before erection is lost and penis softens
Don’t spill the semen – hold the condom against the base of the penis while pulling out
Throw away
Wash if possible or dress
If the condom breaks:
During intercourse, pull out and replace
If semen leaks out, wash with soap and water
If semen leaks into vagina, discuss options

7. Do’s Don’ts
Do store in cool, dry place (long exposure to heat makes them more breakable)
If not pre-lubricated, do use water-based lubricant only
Leave space at the tip and squeeze out air
Do check exp date
Do use only once
Do put on BEFORE ANY GENITAL CONTACT
Don’t store in back pocket, wallet, glove compartment
Don’t use oil-based lubricants (no baby oil, Vaseline)
Don’t use if out-of-date
Don’t unroll it first
Don’t “double-up”
