2. Vasilopita
THE TRADITION - One of the more beautiful and inspirational traditions of the Greek Orthodox Church is the annual family celebration of the Vasilopita.
The Greek word Vasilopita is directly translated as “Sweet Bread of Basil”. When the Vasilopita is prepared, a coin is baked into the ingredients.
On New Years Day, the bread is traditionally cut by the senior member of the family, and the individual who receives the portion of the Pita which contains the coin is considered Blessed for the New Year.
THE HISTORY - This old tradition commenced in the fourth century, when Saint Basil the Great, who was a bishop, wanted to distribute money to the poor in his Diocese. He wanted to preserve their dignity, so as not to look like charity, he commissioned some women to bake sweetened bread, in which he arranged to place gold coins. Thus the families in cutting the bread to nourish themselves, were pleasantly surprised to find the coins.

4. RECIPE 3 Teaspoon of Baking Powder B.P 1 glass of oil
The juice of 1 orange and the peel grated.
2-3 glasses of flour.
1 glass of sugar
1 Teaspoon of vanillin sugar.
4 eggs
Brandy
¼ of glass

5. The fourth ingredient is orange peel
First we put sugar
Then we add oil
We add orange juice
The fourth ingredient is orange peel

6. We add all the eggs .

7. We are using a mixer to mix all the previous ingredients.

The Baking powder and the vanillin sugar

8. After the mixture is finished we put it in a pan
.At the end we wrap a coin with aluminum paper and we insert it in the cake.
We decorate the cake writing the new year 2017 with almonds .

9. Try to make it! It is easy! We bake it for about 45’ in 175c
We cut it in pieces .
The lucky boy for 2017 is Theodore. He found the coin in his piece.
