2 Local Law Enforcement Sheriff Police Delivering Subpoenas

3 Local Law Enforcement A sheriff is an elected position and he has jurisdiction throughout the entire county. Terry Johnson is the elected sheriff in Alamance County.

4 City Police The police department are hired law enforcement officers at the city level. The police department is led by a police chief who is hired by the city manager.

5 Delivering Subpoenas A subpoena is a court order requiring someone to show up in court and testify as a witness. A person or evidence can be subpoenaed. It is delivered by the mail and tells someone they are scheduled to appear in court.

6 Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
The investigative part of the United States Department of Justice. The mission of the FBI is "To protect and defend the United States against terrorist and foreign intelligence threats, to uphold and enforce the criminal laws of the United States, and to provide leadership and criminal justice services to federal, state, municipal, and international agencies and partners."[

Often called “Weekend Warriors”, they are the reserve branch of the US Army and US Airforce. Used in states of emergency and when needed in warfare. Many are being used today in Iraq.

13 SBI and State Troopers The SBI is the state level investigative department. It acts like the FBI, but at a state level. State Troopers deal with the enforcement of traffic laws throughout the state. They primarily write tickets and investigate traffic accidents.

14 Dept. of Motor Vehicles The DMV is a state-level government agency that administers vehicle registration and driver licensing.

15 Dept. of Corrections The Department of Corrections refers to the prison system. The Dept. of Corrections is responsible for confinement and rehabilitation of prisoners.

16 Cop Toys Radar Guns help determine the speed of drivers.
Pepper Spray is a weapon that disables a suspect with a burning spray to the eyes. Taser Guns are weapons that fire an electrical current through a suspect’s body.

Three-Strikes Laws are mandatory sentences for convicted criminals of the same offense 3 or more times. Confiscation of Property – sometimes the government will take a convicted felon’s property like in the case with a drug dealer. Monetary Compensation – if someone loses a civil case, they may be required to pay the plaintiff a sum of money.

21 Recidivism & Anti-Social Behavior
Retribution is the idea that the punishment should fit the crime. Restitution - When a court orders restitution it orders the defendant to give up his gains to the plaintiff. Deterrence holds that punishment is a necessary consequence of a crime and hopefully society will see this punishment and this will keep other members of society from committing the same crime.
