3 Monday Aim: How can you create balance and movement while using sharpie to complete your design? Do now: Look at the images below, which one do you think shows movement? Homework: Poster Contest for “Pink October” Complete in your sketchbook! See handout for guidelines.

4 Balance Designs should always achieve a sense of visual balance- how the art elements are distributed in a design. You shouldn’t place all your same elements of art on the same side and place on the paper. This could make one part of your artwork seem “heavy”. Shepard Fairey

5 Movement When your artwork is balanced, it creates movement:
How your eye is lead around a design. Your eye does not get “stuck” on one part of the design. This creates a visual flow and can help people understand your artwork better. Edgar Degas

15 BALANCE: Dia De Los Muertos Mixed Media Self- Portrait Project

16 Dia de los Muertos—the Day of the Dead—is a holiday celebrated on November 1. Although marked throughout Latin America, Dia de los Muertos is most strongly associated with Mexico, where the tradition originated. Assured that the dead would be insulted by mourning or sadness, Dia de los Muertos celebrates the lives of the deceased with food, drink, parties, and activities the dead enjoyed in life. Dia de los Muertos recognizes death as a natural part of the human experience, a continuum with birth, childhood, and growing up to become a contributing member of the community. The most familiar symbol of Dia de los Muertos may be the calacas and calaveras (skeletons and skulls), which appear everywhere during the holiday: in candied sweets, as parade masks, as dolls. Calacas and calaveras are almost always portrayed as enjoying life, often in fancy clothes and entertaining situations.

17 In some of these photos, masks and other decorations are only half-decorated with calacas and calaveras. Why?

18 Vocab to know: Form Actual Form: A three-dimensional object
Implied form: The illusion of an object appearing 3D on paper

19 Balance: The visual weight within a composition.
Symmetry: A mirror image, the design is equally balanced on each side. Asymmetry: Balanced on each side, but not equal and not a mirror image. How could this become asymmetrical?

20 Project Goal: Observationally draw a skull Observationally draw a portrait Combine the two drawings together Overlay designs that represent your personality! Get creative! Use mixed media Use shading techniques and collage

21 Artist Connection José Guadalupe Posada (February 2, 1852 – January 20, 1913) was a Mexican political printmaker and engraver whose work has influenced many Latin American artists and cartoonists because of its satirical acuteness and social engagement. He used skulls, calaveras, and skeletons to make political and cultural critiques.
