Hitler was among other ruthless leaders to rise to power in the 1920s and 1930s by taking advantage of people’s anger and suffering. The Great Depression hit Germany hard. Businesses failed, and millions of people lost their jobs. Hitler won German support by appealing to fears about the economy and bitterness over the Versailles treaty
