3 TRIANGULAR CONTEST Wafq: Committed to parliamentary ascendancy and insisted on the complete independence for Egypt. Monarchy: The kings wanted to rule the country rather than merely reign. Great Britain: committed to preserve its imperial interests in Egypt through advisors and, if necessary, the threat of military force.

5 World War II and Egypt In the late 1930s, Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany’s propaganda in Egypt had a great appeal to palace circles. During the war, the palace tended to be anti-British and pro-German. Wafq leaders and activists had no great sympathy for either of the fascist regimes in Europe. In the wartime, the party was in cooperation with Great Britain.

6 Muslim Brothers’ Society
The society was founded in the late 1920s by Hasan al-Banna. The society’s initial aim was to educate its members in gaining a correct understanding of Islam. In the 1930s, the society was increasingly politicized. Mass rallied and demonstrations demanding the implementation of Islamic law. The organization came out of thewar stronger.

9 Political Actors in Palestine
Arab Nationalist Organizations: In 1919, most of these organization opposed the Balfour Declaration and the division of Syria. As Syrian nationalist option no longer proved practicable, Palestinian national identity strengthened. Nationalist organizations losing their popularity in the mid-1920s. Arab workers in major urban centers of Palestine, such as Haifa and Jaffa, cooperated with Zionist labor organizations, chief among the Histadrut (the General Organization of Hebrew Workers in the Land of Israel).
