Presentation on theme: "Cell Division and Asexual Reproduction"— Presentation transcript:

1 Cell Division and Asexual Reproduction

2 Two Types of Reproduction
Asexual Only one parent Offspring are identical to parent Sexual Two parents (egg cell and sperm cell)

3 Types of Asexual Reproduction
Binary Fission Budding Vegetative Reproduction Fragmentation Spore Formation

4 Characteristics of Asexual Reproduction
Only one organism is needed to reproduce All the offspring are genetically identical to each other and to the parent organism A single organism can produce large numbers of offspring

5 Binary Fission Parent undergoes cell division to produce two genetically identical daughter cells or offspring Example: Bacteria

6 Binary Fission Allows for rapid population growth under ideal conditions Bacteria can double population every 20 mins

7 Budding Offspring begin as a small growth on the parent
Bud keeps growing (cell division) and eventually breaks off from parent Example: Yeast

8 Vegetative Reproduction
Plants that reproduce asexually Strawberries send out “runners” that can form into new plants

9 Fragmentation Small part of an animal breaks off and grows into a new organism Example: Sea Star

10 Fragmentation Parent can regrow lost body part Called “Regeneration”

11 Spore Formation Reproduction via forming large numbers of spores
Spores = similar to seeds

12 Bill Nye: Cloning Video

13 Cloning Activity - Groups of 3
You and your group are in charge of the Science and Technology branch of the Government of Canada List out the pros and cons of cloning (human, animals, etc.) State your stance on cloning (fully agree on all fronts? Support only animal cloning?) Submit regulations (“we will allow cloning under these circumstances”)

14 Review Questions To help study for the test
Will not be collected, but if you do these questions, it will definitely help Page 70 – 71 Questions 1-14, 17, 18
