Start at Below “Search”, Select “Databases” Where to find Refworks (

3 Select the new version of Refworks

4 Login to the New Refworks
For first time users

5 Enter your University email

6 Provide your email and click on Check

7 Choose a password and click on Sign Up

8 Remember to Click the Activation link on the email

9 Various methods to add references

10 When exporting references from a database, select ProQuest Refworks if asked to choose

11 Why RefWorks/EndNote? RefWorks/EndNote allows users to create personal databases and use them for a variety of research activities. References are quickly and easily imported from text files, online databases, through RSS feeds or via the web. Users can automatically insert references from their database into their papers and generate formatted bibliographies and manuscripts in instantly. Users can access RefWorks any time, from any web-connected computer running any operating platform. RefWorks/EndNote incorporates an online style guide within the program. No more hunting through style instructions to find the correct format. Users can upload any type of file -- graphic, video, sound, and more -- to existing references stored in RefWorks?EndNote databases, and easily retrieve and share them.

12 Compiling your database
CAB Abstracts, Medline, Zoological Record (Web of Science) Science Direct Wildlife & Ecology Studies Worldwide (Ebscohost) Biological Abstracts (Proquest) ISAP (Sabinet ) Google Scholar Manually (adding .pdf docs from your desktop ; references by hand)

13 CAB Abstracts

14 Click on the dropdown arrow and select Save to Refworks
Do a search on CAB Abstracts and select the references to export

15 Decide which elements must form part of your database and click on Send
NB !!!! Wait for Refworks to open up automatically. If it does not happen look for a possible PopUp Blocker message on your screen

16 Login to Refworks to export your results into your Refworks folders

17 To create a folder click on the Folder icon and from the displayed list click on the +

18 Name your folder and click on Save

19 Click on OK to see the list of references

20 Select the reference to be added to a folder and click on the Folder icon

21 Your list of Folders and Sub folders will be listed
Select the correct folder/s and click on Apply

22 To clear the recently imported references
The selected folders will be displayed after exporting

23 Confirmation message when reference is added

25 Do a search on Science Direct and select the references to be exported
Click on “Export ”

26 Click on “Save to Refworks ”

27 Click on OK to see the list of references and add it to the correct folder

29 Do a search and select some of the records by clicking on “Add to folder” icon

30 Once you started adding items the Folder icon will change and a list of the added items will appear in the right hand column

31 To view the list of selected records
click on “Folder” or “Folder view”

32 Select records to be exported
To export the selected results click on Export

33 1. Select the “Direct Export to Refworks” button
2. Click on “Save”

34 Click on OK to see the list of references

36 Do a search on Biological Abstracts and select the references to export
Click on Save

37 From this dropdown menu select Refworks

38 Check the displayed information and click on Continue

39 Click on OK to see the list of references

41 Supply search terms in search
window and enter

42 To view the list of selected records
Login to Refworks and click on Search. Select Online Catalogue or Database To view the list of selected records click on “My List” Select some of the records by clicking on the icon

43 Select records to be exported
Select “Cite Record”

44 Select “Cite with Refworks”

45 Click on OK to see the list of references

46 ISAP (Index to South African periodicals)

47 Type a keyword/s in the Keywords window Remember the Boolean operators
Click on Search

48 Select the records to be used
Selected records will appear in the “My action List”

49 References in the “My action List” can be printed, e-mailed and exported to Refworks
Select all the references in the “My action List” and click on “Export selected Items”

50 Select “Export to Refworks”

51 Click on OK to see the list of references

53 Open up Google Scholar Click on Settings

54 Depending on the Reference managing software you are using, select either Endnote of Refworks.

56 Add references manually

57 1. Click on the + sign and select Create new reference

58 Choose the correct document format and continue to complete the template. Remember to Save the record

59 1. Click on the + sign and select Upload document

60 2. Select the .pdf documents from your computer or Dropbox and drag onto Refworks

61 The files will be displayed while Refworks analyses the files and create the record

62 The .pdf document will be attached to the record by default.

63 How to edit a reference

64 Change to Full view

65 Select the Edit icon

66 Do the necessary editing and remember to Save the record
