3 UCL LIBRARY SERVICES Endnote : setting up a library  Start menu – All Programs – Endnote  To create a new library choose New … from the File menu  Note that this creates two elements - a file library.enl - and a folder library.Data  You can choose to work in Local Library mode; Online Search mode; or Integrated mode. We recommend Integrated mode.

4 UCL LIBRARY SERVICES Endnote : adding references: method 1  pulling references in from selected sources  click PubMed in the Online Search area in the left-hand panel  type in some search details & click Search  a box will display the number of results, click OK to add the results to your library & remember to delete any unwanted items.

5 UCL LIBRARY SERVICES Endnote : adding references: Method 2  pushing references from websites into Endnote  e.g. PubMed (www.pubmed.org) - search for some references & select/tick some of them > choose Citation Manager from the Send to menu > click Create file to save the selected items > when prompted, choose Endnote from the pop- up menuwww.pubmed.org  e.g. Web of Science (wok.mimas.ac.uk) – search for some references & select/tick some of them > open the drop-down menu and choose Save to Endnote desktop > click Send > when prompted, choose Endnote from the pop-up menu  for other sources, see our guide!

6 UCL LIBRARY SERVICES Endnote : adding references: Method 3  importing a PDF  Choose Import from the File menu  Click File to import one PDF file and browse to the stored file  Set the Import Option to PDF and click Import.  Always check the newly created record for quality, and note that the PDF has automatically been added to the record. (If you wish to import a folder containing multiple PDF files; you can use File > Import > Folder.)

7 UCL LIBRARY SERVICES Endnote : adding references: Method 4  typing a new reference in by hand  Choose New Reference from the References menu.  Choose the appropriate reference type & enter the details (take care with authors).  From the File menu choose Save and the reference now appears in your All References list.

8 UCL LIBRARY SERVICES Endnote : managing your library  dealing with duplicates Click All References – use CTRL+A to select them all - choose Find Duplicates from the References menu – choose which items to keep (or Skip to the next pair)  dealing with journal names See the Endnote guide for instructions.

9 UCL LIBRARY SERVICES Endnote : managing your library  Adding more PDFs highlight one of the references in your list and click the Find Full Text icon on the toolbar - progress is reported in the left-hand menu. 10 UCL LIBRARY SERVICES Endnote : managing your library  organise your references into Groups  from the Groups menu choose:  Create Group – to manually create a group  Create Smart Group – to create a group that will populate automatically depending on the criteria you choose  Create Group Set – to create a group that shows the overlap between other groups

11 UCL LIBRARY SERVICES Endnote : managing your library  Syncing with Endnote online (aka Endnote Basic) Endnote Basic is a FREE web-based version of Endnote offering basic functionality (not suitable for advanced use). If you have both an Endnote library and an Endnote Basic library you can sync records between the two library. 12 UCL LIBRARY SERVICES Endnote : generate a bibliography: Method 1  creating a static bibliography  select the references you want to use  make sure they are in the right order  choose Export from the File menu  select a location, a filename & export options, including a style for the output:

13 UCL LIBRARY SERVICES Endnote : generate a bibliography: Method 2  using Cite While You Write (CWYW)  make sure both Word & your Endnote library are open  in Word you will see the Endnote toolbar  type some text into a document & use the toolbar to Insert Citations as you type. The citations in the text & the bibliography at the end are automatically formatted  to change the formatting, select a different Style
