1 World War One The United States had long maintained a policy of NEUTRALITY in WORLD affairs. This policy was to be tested

2 World War I The long term causes can be remembered using the Key word

3 Why was Europe Fighting
The first long term cause was Militarism- This is the belief that a nation must build a strong defensive, as well as a good offensive military. In order to protect their economic & world status.

4 Militarism Germany tripled the size of their navy in order to compete with Britain for control of the oceans.

5 Why was Europe Fighting
Alliances- Europe was divided into alliances. The first was the Central Powers which included Germany, Austria-Hungry,& the Ottoman Empire.

6 Why Europe was fighting
The Second was the Triple Entente which included England, France & Russia. The goal of forming these alliances was to create a balance of power.

7 Why was Europe Fighting
Imperialism- The nations of Europe were competing for colonies so they could attain new markets and sources for raw materials. Britain & France had been the first to start colonizing other countries. Germany grew jealous of their empires.

8 Why was Europe Fighting
Nationalism- All members of the alliances believed that their militaries were far superior to their opponents. The British were so sure that they would crush the Germans that their newspapers read “over by Christmas”.

9 The spark that lit the “Powder Keg”
In Bosnia the Archduke Franz Ferdinand (heir to the Austria-Hungary throne)was visiting. When Gavrilo Pricip shot and killed him and his wife.

10 The Spark, continued The A-H Empire declared war on Serbia.
Russia then stepped in, to defend their Slavic Cousins. This caused the Alliance system to kick in

11 Archduke Franz Ferdinand

12 America Joins In America had several reasons to side with the Allies.
First, the close ancestral ties to Britain. We also felt we owed loyalty to France for helping us in the Revolutionary War.

13 America Joins in Economically we had better reason to join the allies because Britain had cut off all our trade with Germany. Allied Propaganda belief that we wopuld be helping to fight against tyranny

14 America Joins In The Germans used unrestricted submarine warfare.
The Germans used a U-Boat to torpedo a civilian ship called the Lusitania (which happen to be carrying weapons in it).

15 The U.S. enters the war on the side of the Triple Entente
America Joins in The ship also contained Americans, this caused public opinion to rise up against the Central Powers. The U.S. enters the war on the side of the Triple Entente

16 The Bridge of the Lusitania

17 Public opinion "We are fighting Germany because she sought to terrorize us and then to fool us. We could not believe that Germany would do what she said she would do upon the seas. Yet, we still hear the piteous cries of children coming out, out of the sea where the Lusitania went down, and Germany has never asked forgiveness of the world." from The Nation in Arms speech by Franklin K. Lane as printed at American Leaders Speak
