AIMS OF SESSION Understand the features and facilities of long haul destinations and their appeal to different types of visitors. (P4)

P4 You will prepare a presentation about features and facilities in a long haul destination of your choice. You must choose ONE destination only so make sure that you choose one allows you to access lots of information about it! You will need to show how it appeals to DIFFERENT types of visitors.

TYPES OF VISITORS Let’s remind ourselves about the different visitor types. Who are they and remember you will include these in your P4 presentation? Leisure travellers Visiting friends and relatives Business travellers Those travelling for medical reasons Educational travellers Backpackers Adventure travellers Retirees

REMEMBER You need to remember that people may look for varying types of holiday to fulfil their needs at different times of the year. For example, a couple with children may take a family holiday in summer, a ski holiday at Christmas and a short break by themselves without the children. You should include options for your chosen destinations for the same group of people to show this.

ACCESSIBILITY In your P4 you will have to describe the methods of transport that you will take to get to your destination AND how you will get around the destination once you are there. Most long haul travel is by air and in order to find out information to your chosen destination and which airlines fly there a good website to choose is Skyscanner gives you a selection of airlines, times and prices however you can go to the airline website directly to find out information.

GROUP EXERCISE In pairs, type in Skyscanner’s website address and enter in the following information. Your client wants to get a flight to Sydney, they are travelling along next Tuesday 2nd May from London, one way. Find out what airlines and flight times as well as prices and feedback to the group.

LONG HAUL AIRLINES British Airways fly to many destinations worldwide, mostly from London Heathrow and Gatwick but also from smaller, regional airports. Passengers may choose to fly with a scheduled airline though some companies like Thomson Airways and Thomas Cook are charter airlines but also offer flights to long haul destinations. You may choose to fly economy, business or first class (or their equivalent depending on the airline) so this is another decision the customer will need to made bearing in mind their budget. Give options for different classes in your presentation.

AIR TRAVEL Frequency of services is very important, some routes are offered daily or weekly and some destinations such as New York will have several daily flights from the UK even with the same airline. Passengers will often want a stopover for very long flights to break up the journey such as flights to Australia where it is common to stop in the Middle East, often Bahrain or Dubai for example.

CRUISING Remember to include cruising if it is appropriate for the destination you have chosen as this is another method of transport to many long haul destinations. Passengers can opt to join a ship in the UK and sail to their chosen destination or they may fly to a destination first, say Miami, and then join the cruise ship there which is a very popular choice. Cruising also offers different cabins for different budgets. Basic cabins are often towards the bottom of the ship without windows. Suites however have lots of room and large windows often with a balcony too!
