1 PROTEINS NUTRITION

2 Other names for proteins
Another name for proteins is AMINO ACIDS or called BUILDING BLOCKS

3 AMINO ACIDS There are a total of 23 different AMINO ACIDS that form a protein. They are divided into two categories: _15_ non-essential amino acids (NEAA’s) _8__ essential amino acids (EAA’s)

4 ESSENTIAL/NON-ESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS
NEAA’s are __MADE__ by the __BODY_, so they do not need to be _EATEN_ in our diet on a daily basis. EAA’s are _ESSENTIAL_ because our body cannot _MANUFACTURE_ them so they must be taken from the _FOODS_ in our __DIET_.

5 FUNCTIONS OF PROTEINS The main function of _PROTEINS_ is for __GROWTH_ and _REPAIR_ of our body tissues. Every single _CELL_ in our body is made up of protein.

6 OTHER FUNCTIONS A source of energy ( _4CAL_/g)
Production of ANTIBODIES_- help keep us from getting sick Make _ENZYMES_- acts as a catalyst (ase) Produce _HORMONES_- regulate body functions

7 “ase” “ase tells you that a substance is an __ENZYME__ which is mainly responsible for _SPEEDING_ up activities in the body.

8 4 elements that make up a protein
C arbon H ydrogen O xygen N itrogen

9 Recommended daily intake
Average person needs about 50 grams per day of protein. Sources of protein include: MEATS, VEGETABLES, EGGS, CHEESES, BEANS, and GRAINS.
