1 Internet of Things : Opportunities for NMHS
CBS Technical Conference, Guangzhou, November 2016 Matteo Dell’Acqua

2 Agenda What is a Thing ? A connected world The IoT platform
Benefit example : Weather Horizon Conclusion

3 What is a Thing ? A physical device
Especially everyday objects, that are readable, recognizable, locatable, addressable, and/or controllable With a distribution of several thousand copies, or more Able to connect to a network and exchange data over this network Embedded with : sensors (to measure the environment) And/or actuators (to act on the environment) Can play a critical role without human intervention Closely tied to ‘cloud computing’ and ‘big data’

22 Agenda What is a Thing ? A connected world The IoT platform
Benefit example : Weather Horizon Conclusion

23 Weather Horizon Use connected vehicules as meteo sensors,
Continental & Météo-France Use connected vehicules as meteo sensors, To improve geo-localised forecasts And develop driver assistance services. 23

24 Météo-France digital strategy
Météo-France met au service des pouvoirs publics et de la société son expertise unique qui allie science, Météo-France digital strategy Crowdsourcing to get information and develop partnership with the users IoT 8 météorologie, étude du climat et diffusion de l’infor - mation.

25 Objectives and Opportunities
To support the emergence of connected vehicles, then autonomous To develop driver assistance services based on real-time and geo- localised meteorological information The meteorological data can be used in real time by the connected vehicles To use vehicles sensors as source of new data to improve Météo-France forecast and alerts models Big Data technologies offer new opportunities to collect and process « massive » data Vehicle data

26 Weather Horizon Up Stream Vehicle sensor Down Stream User interface
Continental Météo-France Up Stream Vehicle sensor Down Stream User interface External Temperature Pressure Wiper Fog lights ABS braking system Geo-localized forecasts and alerts received in real-time in the vehicle 26

27 Upstream : vehicle data
Weather conditions : temperature, pressure, precipitations through windscreen wipers motion Road surface status : ABS / ESP Visibility : lights, fog lamps In the future air quality information Exemple de températures relevées par les véhicules équipés pour l’expérimentation

28 Downstream : an optimized alert service
Nowcasting information for the road sector Geo-localized alert taking into account position and journey Various risks covered : rain, snow, ice, hail, … Real time : phenomenon detection at 5, 10, 15 minutes and up to 1 hour In return The user can validate the information, in order to improve phenomenon detection Data received from the vehicle is used to improve the quality of the forecast

29 Technical solution for the 2016 experiment
Large scale experiment : >200 connected vehicles in France Véhicule Smartphone Application Server Continental Server Météo-France Small box connected to the diagnostic system of the vehicle Read data and transmit it via BluetoothTM to the Smartphone Collect data and visualize it in the user interface Transfer data to a secure server Ingest and process data Supervise the operation of the full system Alerts and forecasts

30 First results Encouraging results
Satisfactory quality of upstream data Vehicles temperature sensors : < 1° compared to reference observation Good detection of negative temperatures associated to ice risks Good complement to traditional observation Ex : possibility to get vertical temperature profiles when the journey is in hilly area and improve the position of snow-rain limit

31 Conclusion NMHSs can benefit from IoT to improve quality of forecasts and to develop new products and services With IoT the volume and variety of non-traditional observation data will grow and impact the data processing system Use of the data requires a pragmatic and incremental approach
