3 Launching the Port of Baltimore’s Next 300 Years
2006 Marked the 300th anniversary for the Port of Baltimore A Forum was held to connect stakeholders, explore partnerships and discuss business trends and challenges. Small group sessions discussed maritime land use, air and water quality issues, educational opportunities, and community programs. In 2006, the Port of Baltimore celebrated its 300th anniversary. It was during the celebratory year, that the was renamed the Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore. A forum was held at MITAGS to look at business trends and challenges. The audience included public agencies such as the Corps of Engineers, Departments of the Environment, Natural Resources and the Port Administraiton, private organizations in the industry such as terminal operators and shipping lines, and community and environmental organizations. The audience was broken into five small group sessions to discuss maritime land use, air quality, water quality, educational opportunities and community programs.

4 Identifying Workforce Challenges
Acknowledged the Port’s aging workforce Lack of awareness of the maritime industry as a career choice New challenges with new security requirements It was acknowledged that the Port had a aging workforce, because unlike in previous years, sons, daughters and relatives were not following the foot steps of their elders because they were going to college or seeking jobs that were not so labor intensive. It was also noted that also the Port of Baltimore is a major economic engine for the State of Maryland, Port awareness was not widespread. Or people knew we live in Port city but had no idea what that meant to their daily lives or the economy. Also, new security measures implemented since 9/11 meant more scrutiny.

5 Creation of the BPA Education and Outreach Committee
Purpose: To encourage and support educational partnerships between the maritime community and the population of the Chesapeake region through programs that positively promote and advance the economic and environmental impact of the Port of Baltimore.

6 Port of Baltimore Educational Opportunities
Tours of public and private terminal facilities Guest speakers for community and educational programs Career day and classroom presentations Meaningful Environmental Field Experiences Education and Job Resources Because we now make an effort to track the outreach to do to schools and communities, we’ve seen our documented impact grow from approx. 2,000 annually, to over 10,000. 8 Maritime Awareness through Student Engagement
Terrapin in the classroom at St. Ignatius Loyola Academy Technology students at Anne Arundel County Community College The partnering institutions help familiarize students with the history of the Port of Baltimore, its economic and environmental impact to the State of Maryland, and educate them about today’s maritime industry which offers trade skills, employment opportunities, and a very positive work environment both on land and at sea. For facility tours, we target grades 5 through college. For the environmental sites, program activities can be designed for grades K through gray! Learning is focused on integrating different modes of transportation, logistics, problem solving, logic and teamwork in order to build skills needed in communications, science, technology, engineering and math.

9 Teaching the Teacher Teacher Externship program began 2012
Merged with the SMART Program 2014 Program expanded to include maritime professionals and teachers from Texas to Virginia to New York. The program started as the BPA Teacher’s Externship in 2011 and merged with SMART program through our connection with the AACC. The program is designed to introduce educators to how the industry works, and network with industry professionals. They see and learn about everything from Maritime law and finance, to security and facility operations. They visit public and private terminals to see the logistics involved in moving cargo through the port.

10 BPA Education Outreach Job & Career Resources
Work with adult job training organizations – Maryland New Direction Mock interviews with high school students and adults

11 BPA Education Outreach Professional Careers
Engineering Administration Law Finance The Port of Baltimore supports a variety of professional careers related to the commerce of the port, such as bankers, accountants, and insurance brokers. And just as important are those positions that offer support for the continued growth of the port, including engineers who design our infrastructure and office personnel who are often the face of the Port. Other Alliances: There is also a huge amount of work involved that to some may seem invisible:  All import and export shipments must be paid for.  Banks with International Business Departments play a major role.   And, just as you would have insurance on your car or your home, you should also have insurance on any cargo that you import or export.  There are some insurance agencies that specialize in this area.
