1 The Biltmore Experience The Career Pathways Partnership A consortium that includes Asheville City Schools, Buncombe County Schools, Madison County Schools, A-B Tech, and the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce Academics in Action

3 Objectives To expose students to careers in the Hospitality Industry To showcase a local business/employer To recruit “home grown” employees through a workforce development initiative To introduce new certificate opportunities in Hospitality and Retail Management at A-B Tech To strengthen the Tech Prep Consortium and business partnerships

4 Overview of Program A-B Tech’s commitment Show connection between post secondary and secondary and the world of work Establish new certificate programs Guest Speakers Articulation Curriculum programs

5 Secondary Partners Enka High School- 10 th grade focus Shadowing, internships, and employability skills Erwin High School- 9 th Grade Career Academy Class visits by A-B Tech instructors and Biltmore Professionals, field trip to Biltmore, and employability skills

6 Biltmore Company Scott McLean, Human Resource Manager Food and Beverage Department Inn on Biltmore Retail Department Outdoor Center Coordinated visits to high schools, estate, and internships

7 How the program worked at Erwin High School- Career Academy Five classroom visits with A-B Tech and Biltmore Professionals Retail Management Food and Beverage Inn on Biltmore Programs at A-B Tech/Certificates Employability Skills Tour of Biltmore Estate and A-B Tech Follow up on Employability Skills and possible shadowing

8 How the program worked at Enka High Met with the entire sophomore class (400 students) to detail program. Narrowed the students to those who were interested in participating in the program (120 students participated in a lunch and learn) Following lunch and learn, 50 students signed up to visit the estate to learn more about the A-B Tech/Biltmore Estate After visiting the estate, 23 students shadowed professionals on the estate (on a teacher workday) Students signed up for internships on the estate

10 What’s next… Follow up with Enka and Erwin students to see who is interested in continuing in internships/apprenticeships Expand areas of interest to include agriculture, business, and transportation Continue partnership with A-B Tech and Biltmore Involve Asheville City and Madison County Schools in internship program
