1 Forgive your enemies but never forget their names - John F Kennedy
What do I call you? Forgive your enemies but never forget their names - John F Kennedy

2 Learning Goals Students will be able to:
Name covalent compounds given the chemical formula. Write the chemical formula given the name.

3 What we already know… Atoms need to satisfy the octet rule Non-metals all want electrons Electrons can be shared

4 What we learned in the lab…
Covalent compounds are ALWAYS Neutral The number of atoms needs to be specified using a PREFIX The MOST METALLIC atom goes first.

5 Number of Compounds 114 elements can be arranged into many different compounds There are an estimated 30 million different chemical compounds All need a UNIQUE name

6 Covalent Prefixes There is no charge in covalent bonds Compounds must be differentiated based on the number of atoms # of atoms related to geometric shapes

7 Prefix Chart Prefix # of Atoms Mono 1 Penta 5 Di 2 Hexa 6 Tri 3 Hepta
7 Tetra 4 Octa 8

8 Naming Covalent Compounds
Determine the name of the first element in the compound. If there is a SINGLE atom write the element only. If more then one use a prefix to describe how many. The most metallic element goes first. N2O CCl4 dinitrogen Carbon

9 Naming Covalent Compounds
2) Determine the name of the second element in the compound. ALWAYS use a prefix for the second element. Replace the ending with -ide N2O CCl4 dinitrogen monoxide Carbon tetrachloride

10 Fundamental A-1 When should you have a prefix for the FIRST element in a covalent compound?

11 Write the number of atoms for the prefixes below: Di Mono Hexa Octa
Developing A-2 Write the number of atoms for the prefixes below: Di Mono Hexa Octa

12 What is the name of EACH covalent compound below? N2O3 C2Cl6 SF6
Proficient A-3 What is the name of EACH covalent compound below? N2O3 C2Cl6 SF6

13 Mastery A-4 A substance can have a different name based on the presence of a single electron. What is the name of each substance below? ClO3 ClO3-

14 Chemical Formulas Chemical formulas are shortened versions of names They are useful in chemical equations Combination of elements with subscripts to identify the number of each atom

15 Writing Chemical Formulas
Identify the element in the first part of the name and write the chemical symbol for that name diphosphorous P

16 Writing Chemical Formulas
Identify the prefix (if any) for the first element. Write the number for that prefix as SUBSCRIPT. Diphosphorous pentachloride P2

17 Writing Chemical Formulas
2) Identify the prefix (if any) for the first element. Write the number for that prefix as SUBSCRIPT. Diphosphorous pentachloride P2

18 Writing Chemical Formulas
Repeat steps one and two for the second substance. Diphosphorous pentachloride P2Cl5

19 How many atoms of nitrogen are in Tetranitrogen?
Fundamental B-1 How many atoms of nitrogen are in Tetranitrogen?

20 Write the chemical formula for carbon monoxide.
Developing B-2 Write the chemical formula for carbon monoxide.

21 Proficient B-3 What is the chemical formula for Trinitrogen hexaiodide Pentaphosphorous octoxide Carbon tetrachloride

22 Mastery B-4 Glucose and fructose have the same chemical formula (C6H12O6). Why are there two names for the same substances?
