4 Board of Governors (BOG) Updates
BOG Composition. The BOG completed its multi-year review and discussion related to composition. Ultimately the BOG decided not to make any composition changes at this time. Presidential Diversity Pledge. September 2016 – approved pledge and sent to all presidents asking to ensure diverse candidate pool in athletics searches. As of April 2017, 307 Division III schools and 36 voting conferences have signed the pledge. 4

5 Sport Science Institute (SSI)
SSI has finalized its strategic plan. It includes nine focal points. Current priority areas include: Interassociation Task Force on Sleep & Wellness (May 2017). Distribution of a substance abuse toolkit (summer 2017). Communication with designated campus athletics health care administrators regarding standards of care. (August 2017) Concussion – partnership with DoD. Held 2nd annual Football Safety Summit. New guidelines (January 2017). In April, the BOG discussed related roles for SSI, CSMAS, BOG and divisional governance structure. 5

6 Football Practice Recommendations
Interassociation guidelines – released in January 2017. April Management Council actions related to preseason practice: Adopted noncontroversial legislation to eliminate traditional football two-a-day practices. Proposed a blanket waiver to allow athletically related activities during the current two legislative administrative days for the 2017 preseason. Division III Football Committee and Management Council Playing and Practice Seasons Subcommittee taking the lead on proposing long-term recommendations for 2018 and beyond. Currently seeking feedback. Possible 2018 Convention legislation. 6

7 2018 Possible Convention Legislation
Football playing and practice seasons. Sports wagering. Internet, parlay card or bookie. Doesn’t eliminate prohibition on sports wagering. Academic misconduct. Requires academic misconduct policy for the entire student body. Expands academic misconduct language. Graduate transfers. 7

8 Budget Planning Updates
Planning year for budget biennium cycle, which begins Sept. 1. Additional unanticipated revenue and reduced travel expense forecast. August 2017, membership dues increase – one-year credit. Per diem increases (individual and host). New championship and nonchampionship initiatives. Revised mandated reserve policy. Intentional spend down of surplus reserve. Budget fact sheet and strategic plan on website. Updated in Sept. 8

9 NCAA Eligibility Center Profile Page
The NCAA Eligibility Center (EC) has created a new free registration process for Division III prospective student-athletes (PSAs). The new free Profile Page provides PSAs (and current student-athletes) with information on the recruiting process and an NCAA ID number. Allows compliance officers to more easily use the NCAA’s free, on-line compliance forms. Staff has begun an intensive educational plan to educate the membership on the benefits, which included a series of webinars. 9

10 Academic and Membership Affairs Resources
AMA staff created an Athletics Recruiting Quick Reference Guide. The guide includes the following: Allowable contacts; 2. Campus visits; and 3. Social media guidelines. Created a short-video on how to use RSRO. Developed a one-page quick reference sheet on how to seek help for interpretative questions and waivers. All resources available on NCAA.org. 10

12 Sportsmanship & Game Environment
Working Group December 2016, launched a Division III specific sportsmanship webpage on NCAA.org. Through a partnership with the Disney Institute, the Sportsmanship and Game Environment Working Group has created Division III game environment service standards known as “Gameday the DIII Way”. Rollout will occur in Fall of 2017 and at 2018 NCAA Convention. Training will be available both online and through in-person offerings. 12

13 Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives
Division III specific Diversity and Inclusion webpage. Diversity and Inclusion Working Group’s Initiatives: Request presidents be champions of change. Senior women administrators (SWA) professional development program. (October 2017) Conference grants for diversity. ($2,500/conference) January 2017, released the “Diverse Workforce”, a guide to assist schools in diversifying athletics searches. Division III Student Immersion Program [42 participants attended the 2017 Convention]. Participants invited to attend Career in Sports Forum. 13

14 Faculty Athletics Representatives (FAR) Engagement Working Group
Management Council endorsed. Process includes: Survey to assess current engagement. (Late spring 2017) Collection of conference data, specifically bylaws and constitution related to FAR engagement. Compiling a national level report of FAR engagement (e.g., committees, NCAA Convention attendance, etc.). Status report at the 2018 NCAA Convention. 14

15 LGBTQ Working Group Management Council endorsed and teleconferences began in Feb The working group’s charge: Examine the current and potential programming, resources and recognition of the LGBTQ community and its allies in Division III. Increase engagement and collaboration at the institutional, conference and national levels. Develop and distribute membership survey. (Fall 2017) Resource: 5 Ways to Have an LGBTQ-Inclusive Athletics Department. Status report at the 2018 NCAA Convention. 15

16 360 Proof Partnership with NASPA.
Free, evidenced-based, high-risk alcohol use prevention web program for student-athletes and student-body. January 2015 – Division-wide rollout. Currently, over 195 schools registered. Enhanced marketing and promotional campaign. 16
