1 THE END OF RECONSTRUCTION

2 Main Idea As white Southerners regained power, Reconstruction ended, as did black advances toward equality. Why It Matters Now Reforms made during Reconstruction made later civil rights gains possible.

5 1) What did the Fifteenth Amendment declare?
The right to vote should not be denied on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude. 2) What effect did scandals in the Grant administration have on the Republican party? They helped spilt the party! 3) What demands did Southern Democrats make in the Compromise of 1877? The removal of federal troops from the South; land grants and loans to build railroads; money for internal improvements; appointment of Democratic to the cabinet

6 ULYSSES S GRANT is a Republican, elected president in 1868
ULYSSES S GRANT is a Republican, elected president in Freedmen where key in his election. To protect African Americans he promoted an Anti-Klan bill.

7 Despite attacks by the KKK, over 500,000 African Americans are voting in the South
Voting in elections, drafting new state constitutions and serving in congress made African Americans an addition to politics!

8 15th AMENDMENT – states citizens cannot be stopped from voting based on race
Women were still not given the right to vote… They were upset!

9 What are poll taxes and literacy TESTS???
Poll taxes and literacy tests will try and prevent them from voting

10 President Grant did not choose his advisors well
He chose friends and family members to fill positions they were not qualified for

11 Some of his friends in cabinet positions took bribes and caused scandals

12 The Republican party started to split and was no longer strong and unified

13 PANIC OF 1873 – some banks made bad loans and had to close

14 LeD to ECONOMIC DEPRESSION – a time of low business activity and high unemployment
Lasted 5 years, many businesses fail and people lose jobs

15 The Republicans are blamed and the Democrats begin to win more elections

17 Election is so close that both sides declare they are the winner
Hayes is eventually named President as the result of a compromise

Some rights are gained for African Americans – 14th and 15th Amendments The 13th, 14th and 15th amendments are all geared toward civil rights.

PROBLEMS SOLUTIONS Black codes: Southern states passed black codes to keep power over former slaves. Before states were readmitted, Congress made them pass a civil rights amendment and allow black men to vote. President Johnson: President Johnson blocked Reconstruction measures. Congress impeached him to remove him from office. Education: Newly freed African Americans needed an education. Organizations set up freedmen’s schools. Economy: African Americans needed to make a living. They farmed on confiscated land, signed work contracts, or sharecropped. Ku Klux Klan: Ku Klux Klan terrorized African Americans and Republicans. Congress passed anti-Klan laws. Voting: Southern states tried to keep African Americans from voting. Congress passed the Fifteenth Amendment to give them voting rights. Back to Home
