Understand the EPR Developing Effective Bullets Helpful Hints EPR Example Know Your Ability Q & A

3 Misconceptions Common Misconceptions
“I have to stand up for/take care of my people” “My people always come first” “It’s not about me” You MUST take care of yourself/career in order to effectively take care of your subordinates

4 Preparing to Write Plan ahead Know yourself and everyone you rate on

19 Developing Effective Bullets
Action/Accomplishment Element Describes member’s tasks, actions or behavior What was the task? What did the member do? Be specific! Use verbs (appropriately)! Grab the reader’s attention Impact Element Clarifies relevance of the action. Answers the “so what?” or “why was that/this action important?” Provide impact: What is significant? Who is affected? Why should I care? Quantify: How much/many? What percentage?…Only when useful Scope: Unit-wide? Base-wide? Air Force-wide? Community-focused? This is the most important section but typically written the weakest

20 Developing Effective Bullets
What was the action/accomplishment? What did you do/how do it (be specifc)? What was the Result or Impact? What was the action? What was the accomplishment? 25 Helpful Tips Do: Don’t: Quantification
High impact - Don’t claim what everyone else does If you can “cut” your impact and place it on someone else's EPR…it’s not good! Begin with action verbs Change key duties & responsibilities yearly (There are exceptions) ENSURE verbiage meets intent of block Don’t: 2-3 Word Superlatives (rarely use) Skilled arbitrator! “Lead-ins” are a waste of space Words mean something, make them count No duplicate bullets…ever! Use weak impacts…remember separate yourself/ratee from the pack Enhanced morale/camaraderie

26 What makes an EPR “Good” vs “GREAT”? Words mean something
Your accomplishments justify your rating Are you capturing the significance of what you do? What makes an EPR “Good” vs “GREAT”?

42 VOSLER NCO ACADEMY Promotion Statistics

43 Promotion Statistics, FY16
Promote Now and Must Promote - Force Distribution (SrA-TSgt) 5% = Promote Now 10% = Must Promote 85% = Promote Not an automatic promotion The strongest records receive the highest board scores A sustained superior performance based system versus a "what have you done for me lately" 5 years' worth of records

44 Promotion Statistics, FY16
MASTER SERGEANT - 16E7 21,504 eligible 5,019 selected 23.3% promotion rate Force Distribution Factors: PROMOTE REC ELIGIBLE SELECTED OF TOTAL SELECTS BY PROMOTE REC PN 1, , % of selects 89.5% of PNs selected MP 2, , % of selects 74.3% of MPs selected P 17, , % of selects 11.9% of Ps selected

45 FY17 Promotion Info E7 Promotion Boards E5-E6 Promotion
EPRs are NOT scored for E7-E9 testing NO mandatory numerical benefit to receiving a PN or MP The advantage is with the board’s impression 5 EPRs are reviewed (previously 3) E5-E6 Promotion Up to 3 EPRs are scored (Promotion Eligible) There doesn’t have to be 3…if only 1 is eligible, than that EPR is scored Breakdown: 1 eligible EPR = 100% 2 eligible EPRs = 60/40% 3 eligible EPRs = 50/30/20% Promote Now is worth 250 pts Must Promote is worth 220 pts Promotes are worth 200 pts

46 FY17 Promotion Info EXAMPLE:
If there are two EPRs that are promotion eligible, they are weighed using the following calculations... - If the top EPR is a PN, the 250 pts will be multiplied by 60% (250 x .6 =150) - If the second EPR is a P, the 200 pts will be multiplied by 40% (200 x .4 = 80) - EPR score = 230 pts Your PFE/SKT and decorations are still a factor.
