3 Objective Rationale Today we will acquire and use academic vocabulary It is important to continue expanding our vocabulary and to ensure we use words correctly

4 Inherit (verb) I inherited a house from my grandparents.
To receive something from someone after that person’s death I inherited a house from my grandparents. To receive as part of one’s physical or mental make-up from one’s parents The baby inherited his mothers red hair.

5 Latitude (noun) The latitude of New Orleans is 30 degrees north.
The distance north or south of the equator measured in degrees The latitude of New Orleans is 30 degrees north. A region as marked by its distance for the equator. Tropical plants cannot survive in northern latitudes. Freedom from strict rules As kids grow older they like a little latitude to make decisions.

6 loath (adj) Donald Trump is loath to admit any mistakes.
Unwilling; reluctant Donald Trump is loath to admit any mistakes. Synonym: reluctant, disinclined

7 maintain (verb) To declare something to be true Although she has been convicted, she continues to maintain her innocence. To continue in the same way or condition To finish the Boston marathon, try to maintain an even pace. To keep in good condition The state of Arizona maintains this highway.

8 It’s fun to watch houses get renovated on “Fixer Upper”
Renovate –verb To make like new again It’s fun to watch houses get renovated on “Fixer Upper” Renovation –noun the act of renovating; the thing renovated The homeowners don’t see the house until the renovation is complete.

9 Reprimand (verb/noun)
Verb –to scold in a harsh or formal manner The teacher reprimanded us for eating in class. Noun –a strong scolding from someone in authority We received a reprimand for eating in class.

10 Mr. Jones will supervise students during study hall.
Supervise (verb) To direct or manage activities Mr. Jones will supervise students during study hall. Supervision (noun) The act of managing or directing Supervisor (noun) A person who manages or directs activities If one of the kids gets hurt, report it to the program’s supervisor.

11 PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUES
Persuasive techniques are used to get people to believe your argument or claim. There are three major types: Ethos: (Credibility/Character) This appeal brings in reliable experts or acts as proof that the author/speaker is an expert in the topic. Logos: (Logic) This appeal brings in raw statistics or facts to backup the argument. Pathos: (Emotion) This appeal brings in emotions to connect with the audience, like fear, happiness, or guilt.
