1 PowerPoint Presentation Guide
Double check with Score Sheet.

2 Scoring Directions Look closely at Deadlines! Scored by CRA
Observation, Justification/Background Research, Research Question, Hypotheses, Variables, Procedures, & References will be scored by CRA for a total of 34 points. To pass you will need to receive at least 28 out of 34 points AND have been approved. Scored by Symposium Judge Title, Results, Data Analysis, Conclusion, & Presentation Skills will be scored at symposium for a total of 22 points. To pass you will need to receive at least 18 out of 22 points.

3 Project Title 3 points, scored by symposium judges
Should condense the project’s content into a complete statement and/or question. No spelling errors No abbreviations No technical jargon Matches your Research Question. Clearly defines the purpose of your project. This slide should also contain: Your/Group Names School Name Region HSTA Teacher Name

4 Observation 3 points, scored by CRA
Problem is clearly stated on the observation slide. Explains why this project is important to the community in which you live. Explains why you chose this project and why it is important to you. Tips What is the problem you are trying to address? Why is this a problem? Why is this problem important to you? Tell us about your idea for a project and how it connects to the problem statement? Your project idea should set out to solve or better understand the problem. Why is your topic important to your community? How will this project idea help improve your community?

5 Justification/Background Research
5 Points, scored by CRA Background research should lead you into your research question. This section should be 2 or more slides. Previous background research on observation explained. Research referenced using correct in text APA citations. At least two facts from each research source. Highlighting not narrating. Not in paragraph. Limited quotes. In bulleted formation. Do not plagiarize.

6 Research Question 4 points, scored by CRA
Question aligns w/ problem statement and clarifies intent of experimental design and procedure. Your question must be focused and specific Your question must be researchable. Your question must be measureable. You must be able to answer the question with your project and research. You must include a sentence explaining how your question will improve your community

7 Hypothesis 4 points, scored by CRA Based on research question.
States the relationship between the independent and dependent variables. (How will the dependent variable be affected by changes in the independent variable?). Used background information to help explain your hypothesis. Null Hypothesis stated correctly.

8 Variables 4 points, scored by CRA Correct Independent variable
Correct Dependent variable Correct Control (if you don’t have a control, say no control) Correct Constant variables

9 Procedure 11 points, scored by CRA
Prevalence Intervention Human Experiment Non-Human Experiment Procedures stated student(s) completed their Ethics Contract and/or CITI Training Procedures state student(s) completed their Ethics Contract and/or CITI Training Procedures stated student(s) completed their Lab Safety Contract Procedures provided a clear description of the project Procedures were numbered Procedures identified all safety precautions (including how participants' identity will be kept confidential) Procedures identified all safety precautions (including how participants' identity would be kept confidential) Procedures identified all safety precautions Procedures explained who the study population was Procedures explained who the study population was (must have at least 25 participants) Procedures explained what plant, natural resource, invertebrate (other) the project was experimenting with Procedures explained what the study population did Procedures explained details of the experimental environment and/or change in environment (if you have more than one experimental group explain differences among all groups) Procedures explained how the participants were recruited Procedures included a control group Procedures explained that there are at least 100 participants involved Procedures explained details of intervention (included a copy of the intervention or a detailed description of the intervention) Procedures explained how data was collected Procedures explained how pre and post data was collected Procedures included a copy of the data collection tools (survey/observation sheet AND participant cover letter explaining the project) Procedures included a copy of the data collection tool (observation sheet) Procedures included a copy of the data collection tools (survey/observation sheet AND a participant cover letter explaining the project) Procedures included how data would be analyzed Procedures included how data will be analyzed Procedures explained that at least 25 human subjects participated in EACH group (experimental and control) Procedures explained that there were at least 5 replications per experimental group

10 Results 5 points, scored by symposium judge
Data presented matches research question. Results must include descriptive statistics (averages, percentages, etc.) Displays pictures of research study. Must include graphs/charts that are properly labeled. Results in graphs/charts explained well.

11 Data Analysis 3 points, scored by symposium judge
Selected a statistical test that helps you to test the hypothesis. You need to explain why you used that test to test the hypothesis. You need to explain the statistical significance of the statistical test.

12 Conclusion 5 points, scored by symposium judge
Include an accurate summary of the project. Interpret the data and state if the data supported/rejected the hypothesis. Answer the research question. Discusses limitations of project The limitations of the study are those characteristics of design or methodology that impacted or influenced the application or interpretation of the results of your study. They are the constraints on generalizability and utility of findings that are the result of the ways in which you chose to design the study and/or the method used to establish internal and external validity. Keep in mind that acknowledgement of a study's limitations is an opportunity to make suggestions for further research. Discusses possible solutions to your limitations. Discuss how you would implement change and/or bring awareness to your community.

13 Reference List 3 points, scored by CRA
4 or more academic references used in background present. These references were used in background slides. ONLY in-text citations should be included as full references in reference list. References need to be in APA format.

14 Reminders for Symposium
6 points, scored by symposium judge You will be given points for overall presentation for the following: Speaking slowly and clearly. Answering question with confidence. Not reading your slides word for word. Used presentation and/or note cards for support. No spelling and grammar errors. You will also be given points for your overall use of PowerPoint including: Background color/animation easy to watch Text size and font consistency
