Demonstrate their knowledge of the plot and characters in The Crucible. Understand the historical implications and motives in The Crucible and connect this knowledge to current world events and political agendas.

3 Literary Terms 10/3/16: Q: Can I identify the information that is included in Stage directions? A: Costumes, lighting, scenery, props, the setting, and the characters’ movements and way of speaking. Q: What is Mood? A: The Atmosphere or feeling created in a literary work. Mood is affected by setting, tone, and events. Q: What is an Exposition? A: Writing or speech that explains, informs, or presents information.

7 Literary Terms (10/4/16, cont.):
Q: Can I Identify the differences and similarities between Direct and indirect characterization? A: Compare: Characterization is the act of creating and developing a character in a piece of literature. Contrast: With Direct Characterization, the writer simply states the character’s traits. With indirect characterization, character is revealed through words, thoughts, or actions of the character what other characters say about the character descriptions of their appearance or background.

Q: Can I draw conclusions about the characters’ Motivation and stakes? A: Motivation is the reason that explains a character’s Thoughts, feelings, actions, or speech. Q: Who will be accused of witchcraft? Why do I believe that? Q: Does Act I have any examples of Foreshadowing?

Q: What is dramatic Irony? A: When the audience knows something that other characters do not. Q: Can I summarize the example of Dramatic Irony from Act I? A: The audience knows of Abby’s duplicitous behavior as it is played out in her innocence with her uncle and community, and her underlying passion and drive for John Proctor.
