Page#27-Vocab list 2 10/27/14  Aim: How can we strengthen our knowledge of vocabulary by reading and writing?  Do now: Take out HW (Vocabulary Sheet)  Use context clues and prior knowledge to figure out which part of speech each word is (noun, verb, adjective, adverb, etc.)

Write a sentence for each word  You have 16 minutes to write a sentence for each word.

Finish Group Activity  In groups of 4, write a poem or rap using all 16 words. The subject should be The Crucible. Each person should be in charge of 4 lines in the poem. You will present this poem or rap to the class. Ex: Perplexed is what I was And Bemused at Proctor because He cheated and was a fraud With the licentious Abigail who went against God My antagonist is what she became Especially since she tried to ascertain A Way to get rid of me--propitiation So I had an indignant conversation With my husband yet he is so base That I could not forgive his sarcastical face Especially when describing my food avidly As if I couldn’t recognize his pallor rapidly If I could divorce him I would be ecstatic I will finally evade him for being so emphatic Then finally my condemnation will matter Instead of servicing my husband on a damn platter!

 Get Ready to Present!!

Page#29 Crucible Act II10-29-14  Aim: How can we draw conclusions about characters by breaking down characterization?  Do Now: What would you do if you were accused of something you didn’t do and the consequences were serious?  Performance Nov 21 7pm November 22 7 pm

Finish Reading—We left off on Page 173  Finish Reading Act II Independently.  Then, answer #4, 6, 7, and 9 of literary analysis in your notebooks (yesterday’s page).

Group Work  In groups of four, you will be given questions to focus on. Answer them in your notebooks in complete sentences. You will share your answers with the class.

On page 164-165  Miller provides clues about Mary Warren’s character by describing her directly and by showing how other characters react to her. Reread lines 199-217. What do the stage directions suggest about how Mary feels after her day in court?  (Lines 212-234) How many people have been arrested? What is the punishment if a person is found guilty of witchcraft? How can a person avoid that punishment?  Mary Warren explains that Goody Good was condemned when she could not recite the Ten Commandments. How might this method of judgment indicate that Salem’s hysteria over witches is growing?

On page 166-167  Lines 378-384 Retell in your own words that Elizabeth says about Abigail on lines 382-384. How and why does Elizabeth try to show that she is different from Goody Good and Good Osburn? How effective is this passage in deepening our understanding of Elizabeth and Abigail? Explain. How do dramatic conventions in lines 436-453 show that Reverend Hale’s arrival creates a tense atmosphere in the Proctor home?

On page 168-169  Why would it be reasonable to conclude that Proctor is an independent thinker? Discuss the importance of Proctor’s comment about not seeing any “light of God” in Reverend Parris (519-520).  Summarize: What does Elizabeth see in Hale’s behavior that makes her desperate for Proctor to reveal what he knows about Abigail?  Analyze: Elizabeth nearly begs Proctor to tell Hale about Abigail. Why do you think Elizabeth doesn’t reveal the information herself?  Evaluate: Do you find Proctor’s weakness in this scene believable? Why or why not?

Page 170-171  When Proctor comes to her defense during the questioning, Elizabeth cries out, “Question Abigail Williams about the gospel, not myself!”  Consider what you have learned about Elizabeth in this passage. Do you think that she will make a favorable impression in court? Why or why not?  When Cheever arrests Elizabeth, he says to Giles, “You know yourself I must do as I’m told” (739). Why is Cheever’s attitude dangerous in a climate of hysteria?

172-174  How does Abigail use the poppet to create further conflict between herself and Elizabeth? Create a sequence of events chart. Start with “Mary Warren sews a poppet in court”   In lines 875-885: According to Proctor, what does a person gain by accusing others of witchcraft?  Why does Proctor say that the children have all the power in Salem now? What evidence might he offer to prove this claim?  Who does Proctor think are the truly guilty people in Salem? Why are they guilty?

Take out questions from group work  Agenda: Go over answers to questions  Watch Act II of The Crucible  Watch Salem--
