3 PROMOTION STANDARD To be promoted to the next grade level:
Students must have an overall average of 70 or above for the year Students must have an average of 70 or above in three of the four core academic areas: language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science.

4 WELCOME TO 7TH GRADE One Elective More choices than 6th
If you are identified GT, English and Reading are combined so you get two electives Athletics (5:45 a.m. practices)

5 Requesting Courses 7th Each student will sign up for:
English, reading, math, science, social studies, P.E., one elective, and 2 alternate elective choices. GT Reading and English – sign up for 2 electives and 2 alternate elective choices.

7 Requesting Courses 8th Each student will sign up for one English, math, social studies, science, P.E. and two electives and three alternate electives Reading and English are combined in 8th grade Students currently enrolled in PreAP Math, with a 75 average or better, are eligible for Algebra I (TBD after 5th six weeks) Algebra 1 (J0211) Students will study linear, quadratic, and exponential functions and make connections between the functions, their related transformations, equations, and their solutions in both mathematical and real-world solutions. Taking this course in 8th grade, provides students with the opportunity to take AP math courses in the high school. Algebra 1 is accelerated as it also includes 16 eighth grade TEKS. (Will take STAAR EOC exam) Students currently enrolled in academic math, with an A average, may opt to be tested for placement into Algebra I (see CBE schedule in counselor’s office)

8 Electives Why Choose Two/Three alternate Electives?
A class may be full A class may not fit into your schedule A class may not make the final schedule Electives will not be changed after course verifications.

9 Requesting Courses If a student would like to try PreAP for the first time in science, social studies, language arts, they should have at least a 90 average in an academic course. 7th reading and English must be at the same level Students experiencing success (maintaining a C or better SEMESTER average) in the course should remain in the course.

10 ATHLETICS All students will sign up for P.E. unless playing football.
Girls' coaches will determine placement and notify the counselors. Sports offered are volleyball, football, basketball, soccer, track, and tennis. Remember: UIL, “No Pass, No Play” in effect – any grade below a 70 will prevent playing.

11 Theatre Arts I – J648 Students participate in several performance projects. Students work individually as well as in groups. Theatre II –J746 (Prerequisite Theatre I) – Students develop individual acting techniques and have more design opportunities. Builds on Theatre I to prepare students for HS theatre. Band Choir Orchestra Career Readiness – J700 Students explore college and planning within 16 career clusters. Students participate in career prep activities. There are still components of cooking and sewing. Art I – J650 This course is an introduction to the study of visual arts. Art II – J750 This course is designed to study the visual arts of painting, sculpture and architecture. Publications I – J755 (Application/training required) – Training Thursday, Jan. 26th during advisory. Application due on or before February 3rd. Math lab or Reading elective may take the place of an elective if a student does not meet expectations on the STAAR test. 7th ELECTIVES

Theatre Arts I – J648 Students participate in several performance projects. Students work individually as well as in groups. Theatre II/III – J746/J846 (Prerequisite Theatre I/II) – Students develop individual acting techniques and have more design opportunities. Builds on Theatre I to prepare students for HS theatre Band Choir Orchestra Publications I – J755 Students apply writing skills to the publication of the school yearbook. (Application/training required) Training is Thursday, January 26th during advisory. Applications are due on or before February 3rd. Publications II – J855 (Pre-requisite Publications I) Student Aide – J300 School service opportunity in which students work in school offices or with teachers (Teacher recommendation may be used to place aides)

13 8th Grade Elective HS Credit Courses
Accelerated Spanish – J6310 Students are introduced to the Spanish language and culture. Students acquire basic communication skills in Spanish, including listening, speaking, and writing. **Recommendation: Completion of 7th grade language arts with a minimum 85 average Spanish for Spanish Speakers I and II – J6361/J6362 This is an introductory course for native and heritage language learners who already possess developed oral language skills in Spanish. Art 1 – J7511 Students develop a vocabulary for art, and the skill to graphically express their own inner ideas and attitudes. Principles of Human Services – J8353 This course is designed to address a broad range of knowledge and skills related to personal development and management, promotion of strong families, and preparation of adult roles. Public Service endorsement Principles of Applied Engineering – J8616 Provides an overview of the various fields of science, technology, engineering and math and their interrelationships. Students will use multiple software applications. STEM-CTE endorsement Principles of Manufacturing – J8645 This is a hands-on study of manufacturing technology. Business & Industry-Manufacturing endorsement

14 HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT COURSES
Grade earned for any high school credit course will be applied to GPA Mid term and final count for 15% of grade. No course in junior high is weighted. A = 4 pts. B = 3 pts. C = 2 pts. D =1 pt. **5.0 electives are available at high school** If you do not exit a high school credit course before the end of the semester, the grade points WILL be applied. It cannot be removed even if you retake the course.

16 REMEMBER Course sheets due Friday, February 3rd to Social Studies Teachers Need parent and student signature Please turn in on time even if you have questions, plan to move, or are uncertain about courses. Corrections/Changes can be made in April when course verification sheets go home Students will input selections online: 6th Grade –Tuesday, February 7th 7th Grade – Wednesday, February 8th
