Human Impact Makayla A., Bailey D., Denorris H.
2
What is human impact? Some human damages affect the biosphere.
Today you will learn of the destructive consequences of human activity to planet Earth. Human impact is basically the negative choices or actions to the world. Some examples are Over-Population, destruction of habitats for agriculture and mining, pollution from industry and transportation, and many other activities all contribute to the damage of the environment. Our main focus is to emphasize on the destructive consequences of human activity to the plant we live in.

Pollution There are 3 main types of pollution: Land Pollution
Pollution is the harmful substances in an environment that affects the environment in a negative way. There are 3 main types of pollution: Land Pollution Water Pollution Air Pollution No flashcards for this.
4
Depletion of Resources
In America we go through our resources really fast, even including our renewable resources. Some depletion of resources would include animal extinction and deforestation.
5
Air Pollution Air pollution causes acid
rain. The burning of fossil fuels (such as coal) and other industrial processes release into the air pollutants that contain sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. When these substances react with water vapor, they produce sulfuric acid and nitric acid. When these acids return to the surface of the earth (with rain or snow), they kill plants and animals in lakes and rivers and on land. Air pollution is a result in acid rain . By burning fossil fuels such as coal and industrial process that is sending dirty air in the atmosphere that contain sulfer dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. When reacting this substance with water vapor we create sulfuric acid and nitric acid. With precipation bring them to Earth surface the result may end up killing plants and animals in lakes and rivers and on land.

Land Pollution Land pollution is anything that damages or contaminates the land. There are many causes of land pollution from the trash we throw away in our homes to waste produced at giant factories. Sometimes chemicals from the trash can contaminate the soil and eventually the groundwater we need for drinking. These chemicals can cause animals and plants to die, disrupting the food chain. Landfills release the greenhouse gas methane, which may lead to global warming. Trash that damages or contimates the land .The sources of land pollution comes from garbage, mining, farming, factories. Land pollution can allow chemicals to enter into the soil and water.Recycle - Around 33 percent of trash in the United States is recycled. When you recycle you add less land pollution. Produce less trash - Some ways to reduce trash include not using a napkin or paper towel unless you absolutely need one, drinking water from a cup rather than a plastic bottle, and being sure to properly dispose of harmful trash like batteries and computer equipment. Pick up trash - Don't be a litter bug! Also, you can help out by picking up trash when you see it lying around. Kids make sure to ask your parents for help before you pick up strange trash. Composting - Get with your parents or school and start a compost heap. Composting is when you collect organic waste and store it so it breaks down to where it can be used for fertilizer.

Water Pollution Water pollution is when harmful chemicals and waste get into bodies of water. This affects the water cycle also as well as the biosphere. Water pollution from major events like acid rain or oil spills can completely destroy marine habitats. Sources of water pollution are: Sewage Farm animal waste Pesticides Construction floods and streams What can you do to help: Save water Dont use weed killer Avoid using kitchen disposer Pick up trash after yourself Water pollution is whem harmful chemicals and waste get into bodies of water. This affects the water cyle also and the biosphere. There are many sources of water pollution but here are just the main ones. There are many sources of water pollution. Here are a few of the major causes: Sewage - Even today sewage is flushed directly into streams and rivers in many areas around the world. Sewage can introduce harmful bacteria that can make people and animals very sick. Farm animal waste - Waste from large herds of farm animals such as pigs and cows can get into the water supply from the runoff of rain and large storms. Pesticides and herbicides - Pesticides are often sprayed on crops to kill bugs and herbicides are sprayed to kill weeds. These strong chemicals can get into the water through runoff of rain storms. They can also contaminate rivers and lakes through accidental spills. Construction, floods, and storms - Silt from construction, earthquakes, floods, and storms can lower the oxygen content in the water and suffocate fish. Factories - Factories often use a lot of water to process chemicals, keep engines cool, and for washing things away. The used waste water is sometimes dumped into rivers or the ocean. It can be full of pollutants. What can you do to help? Save water - Fresh and clean water is a precious resource. Don't waste it! Take shorter showers, ask your parents not to water the lawn, make sure the toilet isn't running, and don't leave the faucet running. Don't use weed killer - Ask your parents if you can pull the weeds in the yard so they don't need to use weed killer (an herbicide). Scrape your plates clean into the trash and don't put grease into the kitchen drain. Trash - Always pick up your trash, especially when at the beach, lake, or river. Facts About Water Pollution

Global Warming .Global Warming is use of machinery by humans seems to be increasing CO2 levels in the air CO2 prevents heat from escaping causes slight world wide temperature increases. Some worry about the fact that: Glaciers are melting Ocean levels rise Migrartion of annimals Glaciers melting Extreme weather Change in ecosystems
9
Global Warming Things that can have an impact on global warming include the natural temperature fluctuations of the planet, greenhouse gasses such as carbon dioxide, volcanic eruptions, and increased solar activity. The reason the Earth isn't a ball of frozen ice is because of greenhouse gasses. Greenhouse gasses act like insulation to keep the Earth warm. However, as more and more greenhouse gasses get into the atmosphere, the Earth will start to grow warmer. The main greenhouse gasses that keep the Earth warm are water vapor, carbon dioxide, and methane. There is not really anything to do because the effects arenaturaldiasters so inorder to not even have global warnings reduce the damge that you as a human take part of. We can't do much about the Earth's natural fluctuations, volcanic eruptions, or the sun's activity, but we can impact the amount of greenhouse gasses that are emitted into the air. Many of our everyday activities cause more carbon dioxide to be released into the atmosphere including driving cars and using electricity. You can help by trying to cut down on the amount of electricity you use as well as how much driving you (or your parents) do. Things like carpooling to events and planting trees can help.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle The recycling symbol, or loop, has three arrows. Each arrow represents a different step in the recycling process. These steps are: Collecting recyclable materials, like aluminum cans and plastic bottles. Processing the old materials and making new items. Buying items made from recycled materials There are a number of benefits from recycling. These include: Landfills Resources Pollution What can you do to help: Be sure to recycle everything you can in your house and school. There is almost always a "recycle" trash can around. Be sure to drop your used aluminum cans and plastic bottles there. At home, be sure to put paper items like the newspaper, cereal boxes, and homework pages into the recycle bin. Landfills - Recycling materials means less trash and saves space in dumps and landfills. Resources - When we use materials again, this means we can take fewer resources from the Earth. Pollution- In general, recycling materials can produce less pollution helping to keep our environment clean

Ozone depletion Ozone depletion caused by aerosol chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons or CFC’s. CFC’s escape into atmosphere reacts breaking down the ozone.O3, a protective atmospheric layer. CFC’s UV rays penetrate the atmosphere and cause harm to many organisms. This picture explains the process in steps. CFC’s is the cause of ozone depletion. CFC is chlorofluorocarbons for short, which are aerosol chemicals. By the CFC leaving the atmosphere reacts to the breaking down of the ozone. The UV rays from the CFC’s penetrate the atmosphere. By penetrating the atmosphere causes harm to many orgaisms. The picture to the right gets a bit deeper into the process. CFC’s relaesed CFC’s rise into ozone layer UV releases CI from CFC’s CI destroys ozone Depleted ozone means more UV More UV can lead into dangerous dieseases like skin cancer
12
Ozone Hole When ozone breaks down the ozone layer thins allowing UV radiation to penetrate and reach the surface of the earth. Areas of major ozone thinning called ozone holes appear regulary over Antarctic, the Artic and northern Asia. No flashcard for this.

Population Growth This is the increase in population over a period of time. Causes of population growth include high birth rate, low infant mortality, increased food production and improvement of public health. Some negative effects of population growth are insecurity, crime, unemployment, underdevelopment, inequitable sharing of resources and increased pollution of the environment.
