Heinrich Himmler, the leader of the SS, was given the task of removing Slavic people out of the new lands and re populating them with Germans. Ethnic Germans began to migrate into these new territories by the thousands. By 1942, 2 million Germans settled in Poland. Hitler’s invasion of Russia furthered his intentions of spreading Germans out to these lands and make Slavics, Poles, And Ukrainians their slaves.

The Holocaust Hitler has clearly stated that he had interest in turning some ethnic groups into slaves. When it came to Jewish people he had a very different view. He wanted to exterminate them. Himmler shared this view with Hitler and it was decided that they would eliminate Jews from German society. The targeting of a specific ethnic group for total eradication is referred to as genocide. Reinhard Heydrich was the head of the SS’s security service. He was given the task of administering the final solution towards the Jews. He created a special strike force known as the Einsatzgruppen.

The Holocaust The first the Nazi’s did was to round up the Polish Jews and forced them to live in Ghettos. Conditions were very poor and food was limited. They were forced to wear a star of David so it would be clear to everyone that they were Jewish. By 1941, the Einsatzgruppen became mobile. They went in to territories before the Nazi army and were tasked with rounding up Jews and killing them, burying them in mass graves. The Einsatzgruppen killed 1 million Jews by 1942, but this was viewed as too slow for the Nazis. New camps were built and Jews were rounded up from all the territories controlled by the Nazis, they were put into trains and shipped to one of the 6 camps created in Poland for the purpose of killing Jews more efficiently. Auschwitz was the largest.

The Holocaust Prisoners in these camps faced horrible conditions. 30% were sent to labor camps, the rest starved to death or killed by a variety of methods including gas chambers, shootings, overworking and some were even exposed to medical experiments that usually left them dead. In the end over 6 million Jews were killed, and half of them in death camps. Virtually 90% of German Polish, and Baltic Jews were killed. 2 out of 3 European Jews perished. Gypsies were also killed in large numbers. People also willingly collaborated with the Nazi’s to help them locate Jews, these people were known as collaborators.

The New Order in Asia Under the Greater east Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere Japan easily controlled the territory they conquered. They did include some people from the conquered territories to participate. They used the term “ Asia for Asiatics” , a from of propaganda to convince people that hey were there for good reasons. The reality is that Japan just wanted the resources. Initially the Japanese were welcomed, but it soon became clear what their true intentions were and gradually the occupied people began to turn on the Japanese.
