5 What are youthful populations?
Few relatives to act as carers due to migration and AIDs, increasing cost of care for the elderly. Significant reduction in numbers in each 5-year group As mortality falls in LEDCs, the huge numbers of over 60s will cause major problems Narrow apex suggesting a small proportion of elderly people The pyramid tapers rapidly, indicating high mortality Working population is reduced by migration to MEDCs 50% of Ugandans are under the age of 15! In many LEDC’s the population pyramid has a broad base, indicating a youthful population with a large proportion of children and high fertility.

6 Uganda: What should we know?
After gaining independence from Britain in 1962, the country experienced 20 years of dictatorship and extreme civil violence. The current government has brought relative stability and economic growth to the country, but it has also remained involved in internal and regional conflicts. Now one of Africa's largest and fastest-growing countries. It has roughly the same land area as the UK, but half the population. The population is growing by about one million people per year. Despite economic growth in the past decade, many Ugandans live in poverty and face social and economic inequalities. 80% of employed Ugandans work in agriculture. Countries with a young age structure are more likely to experience conflict
