4 The Old Kingdom Menes was king of Upper Egypt Took over Lower Egypt
At first was made up of two kingdoms Upper Egypt Lower Egypt Menes was king of Upper Egypt Took over Lower Egypt Married princess and united kingdoms

5 Timeline 3100 B.C. -Menes conquered Lower Egypt 2600 B.C.
-Old Kingdom started, lasted 500 years Year 0 2015 C.E. - 6th graders at Dimmitt Middle School learn about ancient Egypt B.C.E.= Before Common Era C.E. = Common Era

6 The Pharaoh Egyptians believed that strength and unity of country came from strong ruler First called kings Thought of as rulers, priests, gods Center of life, ruled earth the way gods ruled heaven

7 The Pharaoh Owned all land in Egypt Made sure land produced well
Gave gifts of land to rich Egyptians and priests Made sure land produced well Responsible for Dams and irrigation canals being built and repaired Built granaries

9 Religious Beliefs Believed in many gods (polytheistic)
Gods were responsible for every action Embalmed the bodies of the dead. (mummies) Believed soul could not live without the body

Cover it with natron (chemical) Wait for it to dry up the water in the body (body will shrink, takes 40 days) Wrap body with long strips of linen (fabric) takes about 15 days Place body in coffin Place coffin in tomb

13 The New Kingdom Around 1550 B.C. Egyptian prince Ahmose lead uprising against Hyksos Began time period called the New Kingdom Egypt became richer and cities grew larger

14 The New Kingdom Began to worship new god
Pharaohs marched armies out of Nile valley to lands in the east Began to worship new god Combination of god of city of Thebes (Amon) and sun god (Re) Became Amon-Re

15 Decline of Egypt Priests of Amon-Re gained power and wealth
Pharaohs’ power declined Around 1370 B.C. Amenhotep IV took thrown Closed temples of Amon-Re Set up new religion with one god (Aton)

16 Decline of Egypt Amenhotep IV died around 1360 B.C.
Son-in-law (Tutankhamen) became pharaoh Only nine years old Priests made him return to old religion Died nine years later Slowly Egypt lost power Struggle between priests and pharaohs Energy and money spent on war Importing iron ore By 1150 B.C. empire was gone
