2 What is Fibromyalgia? Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder which is characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and tenderness in localized areas. Fibromyalgia is NOT fatal.

3 Symptoms The most common symptoms with Fibromyalgia are: Pain Anxiety
Memory and concentration problems Depression Fatigue Headaches Irritable bowel syndrome Morning stiffness Painful menstrual cramps Sleep problems Numbing/ tingling hands, arms, feet, and or legs Tender points Urinary symptoms (pain or frequency)

4 The number one symptom of fibromyalgia, however, is overall pain
The number one symptom of fibromyalgia, however, is overall pain. Unlike other disorders that cause pain in only certain places, fibromyalgia causes pain throughout the whole body. Fibromyalgia causes an intense “sore-like” pain, which can cause the muscles to twitch, or have an aching or burning sensation. Besides muscle pain, the disorder can also cause pain in the joints located at the hips, neck, back, and shoulders, making it very hard for the person with the disorder to sleep and/or exercise. People with fibromyalgia experience something known as Tender Points, where a certain area of the body will hurt when it is pressed (There are about tender points when it comes to fibromyalgia)

5 Diagnosis Fibromyalgia falls in the category of misdiagnosed and hard to diagnose Many of the symptoms for fibromyalgia pertain to other disorders There is no laboratory or machine test associated with is diagnosis Doctors have to simply rely on the symptoms a patient describes in order to diagnose.

6 The newest diagnostic criteria includes:
Widespread pain lasting at least three months Presence of other symptoms such as fatigue, waking up tired and trouble thinking No other underlying condition that might be causing the symptoms Common misdiagnosis for Fibromyalgia include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, malignancy, and hypothyroidism.

7 Treatment Treatments for Fibromyalgia used today inlcude:
Medications to treat symptoms (sleep problems, pain, etc.) Cymbalta (antidepressant) Lyrica (a drug treatment that helps treat patients with seizures, diabetes, and spinal cord injuries) Savella (a selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI)) Physical Therapy (the most suggested treatment besides medication that helps patients deal with pain) Medical Marijuana (many doctors prescribe medical marijuana to patients in order to deal with pain)
