3 Maximum Ef-FORT Lincoln NEVER said he would end Slavery but vowed to preserve the Union and NEVER recognized the Confederate States of America The South started to seize federal property to build strength, including the federal mint, arsenals, and Military outposts including Fort Sumter After the South Attacked the Fort to capture it, Lincoln decided to resupply and Rearm the fort Major Robert Anderson refused to surrender the fort, and after 34 hours of heavy gun and cannon fire, the South captured the fort

The North The South Winfield Scott developed a TWO part Strategy: Destroy the South’s Economy with a Naval Blockade of Southern Ports THEN Gain Control of the Mississippi River to divide the South Fight a Defensive war by making the north continually invade the south AND Use cotton to gain support from Europe

7 War Preparations The North The South Had OVER 2 Million Soldiers fight during the Entire Civil War While BOTH sides saw increased Medical Attention the North Had More Supplies and More Volunteers like Nurses BLUE Uniforms Had OVER 750 Thousand Soldiers fight during the Entire Civil War Gray Uniforms Little Supplies or Available Clothing due to Lack of Industry in the South

8 Training Camp Both the North and South had to teach Soldiers how to fight, march, shoot, and use bayonets Constant Drilling was used to turn BOTH sides in to well prepared fighting Units with the average soldier being able to load, Aim, and Fire their weapons THREE times in ONE minute The Quality of Weapons was never great and could Vary by where the guns and rifles were produced The North would Issue TWO person Tents to its soldiers while the South Relied on Captured Tents from the north to use
