4 What does this look like?
Students who need learning support and those who don’t are enrolled in the same general education core course. Structured learning assistant attends class and following class goes to the lab with students who will benefit from learning support. Structured learning assistants work on activities that contribute to success in the general education course AND coach students to complete algebraic modules to address identified algebraic needs.

5 Statistics Course Description
MATH 1530 Elements of Statistics The purpose of this course is to introduce basic statistical tools and apply them to gain insight into real-world phenomena and to acquaint the student with the principles of probability and statistical inference. Topics covered include measures of central tendency and dispersion , confidence intervals for estimating means and proportions, probability distributions, hypothesis testing, analysis of variance, least squares regression and correlation analysis.

6 Quantitative Reasoning Course Description
MATH 1010 Mathematical Thought and Practice The purpose of this course is to develop skills of inquiry, abstract and logical thinking and critical analysis; to develop the ability to understand and use numbers and statistics; to develop ability in writing, reading, listening and speaking about mathematics; and most importantly, to learn, enjoy, appreciate and apply some basic concepts of mathematics.

8 Co-Requisite Competency 1: Real Number Sense and Operations
Apply the order of operations to evaluate expressions Perform operations with rational numbers Determine the other equivalent forms of the number when given a fraction, decimal number, or percent. Identify and calculate with irrational numbers (no need to numerically simplify radical expressions) Recognize and apply magnitude (absolute value) and ordering of real number Solve real-world application problems Determine the area and perimeter (or circumference) of a triangle, rectangle, and circle Applications with volume, and surface area Solve application problems involving percent

9 Co-Requisite Competency 2: Operations with Algebraic Expressions
Identify and simplify like terms Evaluate algebraic expressions when given values for the variables Create a table of values from an expression Evaluate expressions involving powers and roots Use the distributive law to write equivalent expression Add, subtract and multiply polynomials Factor a polynomial using GCF only Simplify an expression involving integer exponents using the rules for exponents Write numbers in standard and scientific notation Solve real-world application problems

10 Co-Requisite Competency 3: Solving Equations
Solve a linear equation in one variable using multiple approaches - numerical, graphical, and symbolic. Solve a linear inequality in one variable and graph the solutions. Solve formulas and literal equations for a specified variable Solve proportions that simplify to linear expressions Solve real-world application problems (including applications with volume, and surface area).

11 Co-Requisite Competency 4: Analyze Graphs
Create a table of values and a graph for a given relations (may not be linear) Identify and interpret rate of change Use and interpret function notation particularly as it relates to graphic and tabular data Analyze the graph of a linear function identifying the x-intercept, y-intercept, and slope Graph a linear equation in two variables using ordered pairs, using the x-intercept and the yintercept, and using the slope and the y-intercept Write a linear equation in two variables when given information about their graphs Graph linear inequalities in two variables Solve real-world application problems.

12 Co-Requisite Competency 5: Modeling and Critical Thinking
Solve a system of linear equations applying graphical methods Solve a system of linear equations applying algebraic methods (using substitution and elimination) Solve a system of linear inequalities and express the solution graphically Read bar graphs, histograms, and circle graphs Find the mode, median, and mean of a list of numbers Use a tree diagram to count outcomes Find the probability of an event Solve real-world application problems

What if the lab grade lowers the grade in the general education course? Mandatory attendance in lab setting? Penalty for not attending? Decision: More than 3 absences from structured learning assistance lab results in the assignment of an F in the general education course.
