29 Rhetorical Devices Metaphor- a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable. Simile- a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid (e.g., as brave as a lion, crazy like a fox ). Personification- the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form.

Alliteration- the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words. Onomatopoeia- the formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named (e.g., cuckoo, sizzle ). Natural Imagery- a congruous set of images depicting the world of nature. Supernatural Imagery- imagery that is of or relating to things that cannot be explained according to natural laws. Verisimilitude (concrete imagery)- the appearance of being true or real.

Cultural Allusion- something that most people within a culture recognize. Mythical Allusion- when a piece of art, literature or music hints at a piece of mythology. 2nd Person- a narrative mode in which the protagonist or another main character is referred to by second-person personal pronouns and other kinds of addressing forms, for example the English second-person pronoun "you".

Ominous tone- an evil or harmful, foreboding, threatening, inauspicious tone in writing. Joyous tone- a joyful, upbeat, happy tone in writing. Playful Tone- a playful attitude in writing. Sarcastic Tone- an ironic or satirical tone in writing.
