Clinical Apprentices In 2015 LPFT recruited their first Clinical Apprentices cohort. This cohort of 6 were aged, 18 and below. They started with the Trust on 1st December 2015 following a robust recruitment process to ensure we have apprentices with the desired values and behaviours.

Case Study In 2015 LPFT recruited their first Clinical Apprentices cohort. This cohort of 6 were aged, 17yrs - 18yrs came to us straight from school with no prior training or experience of working in a health setting. They started with the Trust on 1st December 2015 following a robust recruitment process to ensure we had apprentices with the desired values and behaviours. They all fitted in very well with their teams and over time with close supervision grew in confidence and took on various tasks often working on their own. As they confidence grew they soon started to work shifts and felt more like a part of the team. Over the course of their apprenticeship the group were supported by their work based colleagues, attending monthly masterclasses, and regular visits from their college assessor and the Apprenticeship Coordinator. The monthly masterclasses provided a valuable platform where the group jelled, became friends and helped each other with their assignments. 5 from the original group of 6 Ellie and Eleanor , who were placed in our acute unit, Emma placed in the Recovery College and Louise and Grace who was placed in our older adults section have been extremely successful in completing their Apprenticeships, and being successful at interview for permanent clinical positions within LPFT. Eleanor, Louise and Grace all plan to apply to become associate nurses leading to become a qualified mental health nurse and Ellie is looking into becoming an Occupational Therapist. Emma is still undecided what career path she would like to follow and the sixth apprentice Martha is struggling with health related issues but hopes to return to her studies and complete her apprenticeship in the future.

“Doing a clinical apprenticeship has given me much more of an insight into mental health and I’ve had the opportunity to experience every aspect of the job. I enjoy working with older adults as there’s more overlap with physical health, which makes it really interesting. In a few years’ time I’d really like to start my nurse training.”

“When I started I was quite shy but throughout the year I’ve just built up my confidence in everything – being able to talk to patients and give staff my opinion – I became a better person. I enjoyed working on the ward, shadowing the nursing assistants and interacting with the patients.

“I’ve always wanted to get into nursing and this way I got to experience working on the ward with the patients. It was challenging working full-time and also studying at the same time. It was hard work but really worth it and I’d encourage anyone thinking about starting a clinical apprenticeship to go for it.
